What Are The Zodiac Murders?

The self-proclaimed Zodiac Killer was directly linked to at least five murders in Northern California in 1968 and 1969 and may have been responsible for more. He taunted police and made threats through letters sent to area newspapers from 1969 to 1974, before abruptly ceasing communication. Despite intensive investigations, no one was ever arrested for the crimes and the case remains open. The mystery surrounding the murders has been the subject of numerous books and movies, including director David Fincher's acclaimed 2007 feature Zodiac. The zodiac killers identity remains a mystery today.

Zodiac: (Things We Know)
  • Kills because it “helps” his headaches.
  • Zodiac told Melvin Belli’s assistant that he had to kill today because it was his birthday. That date was December 18th.
  • Letters from the zodiac slightly change over time. First the “K” is written with 2 strokes and later on the “K” is written with 3 strokes.
  • Called different family members of Darlene’s Farris 90 minutes after she had been murdered. None of the family knew yet. The phone call consisted of the zodiac breathing heavily and saying nothing.
  • Claimed to use transparent fingers to make the fingerprint at the taxi cab murder.
  • Wore military boots
  • Gloves are a size 7
  • Talked about blowing up a bus full of kids
  • Misspells Christ-mass

Zodiac Timeline

  • Dec. 20, 1968: David Faraday, 17, and Betty Lou Jensen, 16, are killed in a gravel parking area near Lake Herman Road in Vallejo with a .22-caliber semi-automatic pistol.
  • July 4, 1969: Darlene Ferrin, 22, and Mike Mageau, 19, are each shot several times with a 9 mm semiautomatic pistol while parked in Blue Rock Springs Park in Vallejo. Ferrin dies, but Mageau lives to provide a description of their assailant. That same night, a man called the Vallejo Police Department, identifying the murder weapon and claiming responsibility for the killing and the Lake Herman Road murders.
  • July 31, 1969: The San Francisco Examiner, Chronicle and the Vallejo Times-Herald receive letters from a person claiming to be the killer. The letters each contain one-third of an encoded message “cipher.” The letters are signed with a crossed circle symbol. The logo is also used on Zodiac brand watches.
  • Aug. 4, 1969: In a letter to The San Francisco Examiner, the killer first uses the famous greeting: “This is the Zodiac speaking,” thus coining the name by which he would be known ever after.
  • Aug. 8, 1969: Donald and Bettye Harden crack the cipher codes and produce a statement from the Zodiac describing his enjoyment of killing.
  • Sept. 27, 1969: On the shores of Lake Berryessa in Napa, Cecilia Shephard, 22, and Bryan Hartnell, 20, are approached by a man in a hooded costume with the Zodiac’s symbol. Both are stabbed several times, but Hartnell survives. He, like Mageau, would later identify the late Arthur Leigh Allen of Vallejo as his attacker. The symbol and the message “Vallejo 12-20-68, 7-4-69, Sept 27-69-6:30 by knife,” that identifies the previous murders, was found written on Hartnell’s car door.
  • Oct. 11, 1969: Yellow Cab driver Paul Stine, 29, was shot and killed just before 10 p.m. at the intersection of Washington and Cherry streets in San Francisco. Officers may have contacted the killer, but did not suspect it was him because the dispatcher had incorrectly informed them to look for a black assailant.
  • Oct. 13, 1969: The Chronicle receives a letter and a portion of Stine’s bloodied shirt from the Zodiac.
  • Nov. 8, 1969: A fourth cipher, 340-symbols long, is sent to the Chronicle. That cipher has yet to be solved.
  • Letters would be sent until the late 1970s, but there were no further confirmed Zodiac victims.
My Theory

I believe that Bob Vaughen and Arthur Leigh Allen were working together. Bob would write the letters and mail them and Leigh would commit the crimes. I believe Bob would be at the scene to help Leigh stage the crime scene and leave behind evidence that they wanted the police to find. Like the fingerprint in blood at the crime scene of Paul Stine.

This theory would explain why Leigh’s DNA (On the stamp of one of the zodiac letters), fingerprints (In blood at the Paul Stine crime scene) and handwriting did not match. It also would explain why Bob’s handwriting matched so closely to the Zodiac’s. Bob was never even a suspect so the police never even thought of this as a theory. Hence the reason as to why the Zodiac case is still a mystery today.

Arthur Leigh Allen

  • Knew Darlene Farris (One Of The Victims)
    • Darlene worked at the Vallejo pancake house and Leigh lived in his mother's basement less than 50 yards away.
  • Wrote detective Dave Toschi after he got out of jail for molestation.
    • Trying to insert himself into the investigation.
    • Coincidently the letter is typewritten.
    • He was the only person out of 2500 suspects to write the detectives on the case.
  • Was in the navy.
  • Seen with the cyphers (Codes).
  • He has mIlitary boots.
    • He has the same size shoes as the Zodiac.
  • He had black gloves.
    • He is a size 7 in gloves like the Zodiac.
  • He had a Zodiac watch with the same symbol as the Zodiac.
    search
  • Background with molesting school children.
  • He had bloody knives
  • He miss spells christ-mass
  • He moved and cleaned his trailer 48 hours after Dave Toschi talked to him.
  • He told his family he was going scuba diving at lake Berryessa on september 27th 1969.
    • He came back covered in blood.
    • He had a bloody knife with him.
  • Dan Cheeney, Arthur Leigh Allen’s friend, told police that Leigh called himself the Zodiac before the killer publicly called himself the Zodiac.
    • Leigh also told Dan that he was planning to hunt people with a gun that had a flashlight attached to it.
    • Leigh had also read a book called “The Most Dangerous Game” which is a book about a man hunting humans.
Things That May Rule Aurthur Leigh Allen Out As The Killer

  • DNA did not match the 33 year old sample they found in 2002 on one of the stamps from the Zodiac letters.
  • Fingerprints did not match the bloody fingerprints at Paul Stine's crime scene.
  • His handwriting was disqualified.
Bob Vaughen

  • Closest handwriting match to the Zodiac out of 2500 people suspects.
    • He wasn’t even a suspect. His handwriting was accidently compared to the Zodiac letters because they thought someone else had written Bob Vaughens posters (which is where they got his handwriting).
  • He is very intelligent and good with words.

Can you give me a link to Bob Vaughens? I'd like to research more about him. Thank you.
