Brutal death of an East Nashville makeup artist still unsolved after more than 10 years

More than 10 years after Livia Smith was found dead, Metro Police are still working to learn more about how she died.

''NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — After a night out with friends, a popular makeup artist was found dead in the middle of a street in East Nashville, and now more than 10 years later the circumstances surrounding her death remain a mystery.

Metro Police said on Feb. 19, 2013, 32-year-old Livia Smith went out barhopping with friends in the 5 Points Area of East Nashville. After hanging out at 3 Crow Bar, she decided it was time to go home, and her friends helped her into a taxi van parked outside the bar. She left on a less than 10 minute drive to her home on Barclay Drive.''

''About two hours later in the early morning hours of Feb. 20, Smith's lifeless body was found lying in the middle of Barclay Drive. She was less than a block from her home.''

''Witnesses described the cab as yellow or green and the driver as a middle aged, Middle Eastern man. Filter said despite a thorough investigation of Nashville cab companies, they weren't able to confirm what company or driver had a cab at the bar.''

Search for Nashville woman’s killer continues 10 years later

A woman hailed a cab in East Nashville 10 years ago and was never seen alive again. A brother’s search for answers, a decade later.

“Her friend helped her to this van that was parked right outside the bar because she was having a hard time walking. That’s the last time anybody saw her… was her getting into that van,” said Detective Matthew Filter of the Metro Nashville Police Department’s Homicide Cold Case Unit.

It’s what happened two hours later that remains a mystery.

“How did she end up with the injuries she ended up with and in that location? She had injuries all over her body. The injuries that killed her were blunt force injuries to the head. We believe that she tumbled on the roadway, and struck the back of her head hard on the road surface which caused her death,” Filter said.''

Someone driving by discovered Smith lying in the middle of Barclay Drive, just a few doors down from her home.

“Something happened inside that van, whether it was a sexual assault, or something else that startled her, made her panic and she felt the need to get out of that van as fast as possible,” Filter explained.

“I definitely think she was fleeing the cab trying to escape sexual assault. My sister was a tough broad, she wouldn’t back down. She was a very tough woman and I think she fought back. You know, and he just left her on the side of the road,” Struthers said''.
