A media release from the Winchester Police Department states the incident began at 3:39 p.m. when dispatchers received a report of an attempted carjacking near Berryville Avenue.

“The owner of the car reported that a male brandishing a knife approached the vehicle, started banging on the window and attempted to open the door,” the release states. “Once the officers arrived on scene, the suspect had fled eastbound on Berryville Avenue.”

A short time later, at 4:02 p.m., dispatchers received a call from another individual reporting a carjacking at the McDonald’s restaurant at 1124 Berryville Ave., the release states. The caller said a man with a knife ran up to the vehicle in front of her, made the driver get out and stole the car.

No one was hurt during the carjacking or attempted carjacking, Winchester Police Chief Amanda Behan said on Thursday.

Tangentially confirmed still missing in story on another case (we have a thread for her):
WINCHESTER — Suspected carjacker Jason Diego Abarca is not the only missing person being sought by the Winchester Police Department. Officials are also trying to locate Nanci Britner, a Winchester resident who has not been seen since the night of June 28.

Soto has said she is not questioning her son's guilt or innocence, but insists his actions on Dec. 13 were the result of a mental breakdown brought on by the May 24 suicide of his brother, Army Capt. Korey Decarlos Platt, coupled with a possible overdose of the Adderall he was prescribed for his attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

According to police reports and information from his mother, Abarca crashed the SUV around 3:30 p.m. Dec. 13 on the Interstate 81 South off-ramp to Berryville Avenue in Winchester.

At 3:39 p.m., police received a report of someone matching Abarca's description who was carrying a knife and attempting to carjack a vehicle near Berryville Avenue. Soto said her son apparently took two of her kitchen knives before he left the house.
