Investigators are trying to determine if the articles of identification found with the remains on Thursday actually belonged to the deceased. A green sweatshirt, blue jeans and plaid Hanes boxer shorts that were found at the scene off Fairfax Street have led police to suspect the remains are from a male. A pair of Colorado rubber water boots and a blue lanyard with a silver crucifix, key and a picture of the the Virgin Mary also were recovered.

The remains were found about 25 yards behind a home along Golden Lane.

The remains were found in a wooded area behind a Berkeley Springs residence that has been used as a religious retreat and is affiliated with Hispanic churches in Montgomery and Prince George's counties in Maryland, and the sheriff said authorities are exploring a possible connection with the deceased.

MARTINSBURG — A West Virginia Medical Examiner said a cause of death could not be determined after reviewing human remains found in Morgan County last year.

“Due to the skeletal condition of the remains and lack of evidence of trauma, the cause and manner of death are undetermined,” according to statements from the report in the press release. “Identification cannot be accomplished at this time due to the condition of the remains, migrant status of the individual and lack of evidence for comparison.”
Police said the individual may have used the name Andreas Sanchez.

This person frequented the Tacoma Park Maryland area and may have previously worked at a ranch or farm somewhere in West Virginia.
A photo was located at the scene from an ID card with the name Jose E. Castillo. Officials say the photo may or may not indicate the identity of the remains.
Medical examiner: No identity, cause of death can be determined for remains

Remains are probably missing migrant worker, says medical examiner

According to the Sheriff, the Medical Examiner determined that the remains were likely to be those of a man identified by a Washington, D.C. church group. The group had hosted a retreat in a rented house in the 500 block of Martinsburg Road in February 2016. The man had come to the retreat but did not return to the Washington area at the end of the event, police said. The remains were found on a hillside behind the retreat house.

“The clothing on the remains matched the clothing of a Hispanic migrant worker who had gone missing in February of 2016, confirmed by a photograph provide to OCME [Office of the Chief Medical Examiner],” Dr. Orvick’s report said. “Toxicological testing could not be performed due to lack of adequate specimen.”

The medical examiner’s report indicated the remains were consistent with the photo of a man who may have used the name Andreas Sanchez.

Investigators found he was known to frequent the Takoma Park, Md. area and may have worked at a ranch or farm in West Virginia.
