NYPD still hasn’t identified homeless drug addict set on fire at Lower East Side NYCHA building

A homeless drug addict set ablaze while sleeping in the stairwell of a Lower East Side NYCHA building remained unidentified Friday — a week after an cruel building resident set him on fire, police said.

The victim, who is believed to be in his 30s, remained in critical condition with severe burns across 75% of his body at the New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center burn unit Friday.

The man, who regularly slept in hallways and stairwells of the Samuel Gompers Houses building on Pitt St., was set on fire as he dozed on a third-floor landing about 4:50 p.m. on Nov. 5, cops said.

And 13 days later he died in the hospital

A homeless addict set ablaze during a horrifying, caught-on-camera attack inside a Lower East Side NYCHA building has died, authorities said Saturday.

The victim, whom officials have yet to identify and is known only as John Doe, died at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center burn unit Thursday after clinging to life for 13 days.

Nathaniel Terry, who lives in the building, was arrested for setting the victim’s pants leg afire with a lighter, police said. When he was arrested, Terry said he was trying to “scare” the victim off, a police source said.

There is also a pic of the victim in the first link. No updates the last two days so he's still not identified.

My God, how terrible and cruel must you be to set someone on fire?

Rest in peace, Sir. :(

My God, how terrible and cruel must you be to set someone on fire?
I was just thinking the same thing. To treat fellow human beings worse than vermin shows pure evil in the heart and a severe psychiatric disorder in the mind.
I hope he is sent to a secure unit. These people should not be free to roam.

Whats with Namus having so little information? They don't even mention that he was lit on fire. I've seen this in plenty of other cases where the Doenetwork page of a doe will have an entire paragraph of info, but then the Namus page of that same doe will just be "Found in lake" or something.

Bumping case up. Still listed in NamUs as unidentified.

Just some thoughts:
Maybe it would have helped to indicate type of surgery. Do they think he had a tumor removed? To treat epilepsy? A shunt placed? Or really had no guess as to diagnosis?

Did they try to get isotopes? Is he a potential candidate for genetic genealogy?

Since it’s New York even if he’s identified there’s a good chance he becomes unclaimed since hes likely homeless and likely has no close family.

His body was burned for 75% and the fire started and spread from his legs when @@!!!f sat his trouser- leg on fire. Somebody splashed water on him, noticing the fire so his face was spared.

From this People v Terry I posted above.

Terry is charged with attempted murder in the second degree (PL §§ 110/125.25(1)) and related charges in connection with an incident at 60 Pitt Street in Manhattan. According to affidavits filed in support of the warrant, on November 5, 2021, police units were called to 60 Pitt Street in response to reports that an unknown man ("John Doe") was on fire in the building's third-floor stairwell. When the police arrived at 60 Pitt Street, the John Doe was no longer on fire, but was severely injured and transported to the hospital for treatment. Thirteen days later, John Doe died of his injuries.

The supporting affidavit further states that on the night of the incident, police were able to retrieve video surveillance footage from the stairwell that depicted the entire incident. Detective Marcelino Alvarez testified he viewed the video footage. The video shows that at approximately 4:43 p.m., John Doe was sleeping on the third-floor landing of the building stairwell as he was approached by a man wearing a tie-dyed sweatshirt and tan hat. The police later identified the man in the sweatshirt and hat as the defendant Nathaniel Terry. Video surveillance then shows Terry taking a lighter out of his pocket and holding a flame to the pant legs of John Doe, causing Doe's pant leg to ignite. Terry then walks down the stairs and exits the building. As Terry leaves the building, the fire begins to spread to John Doe's entire body. A few minutes later, a third party comes into the stairwell and pours water over John Doe to extinguish the fire. The surveillance footage also shows Terry going back into the apartment building at approximately 4:49 p.m. and subsequently opening a mailbox that has "13B" written on it. The video also shows Terry using an iPhone on the 13th-floor staircase landing.
