Questions raised over police handling after teen mother-to-be found dead

ARNWELL COUNTY, S.C. (WACH) — A pregnant 17-year-old was found dead days after her family says she disappeared and now they're demanding answers and are questioning the response of the City of Barnwell Police Department (CBPD).
. . .
According to Kimberly Kite, a former law enforcement officer and founder of The Broken Link Foundation, said Hogg's family reached out to her after they received no help from law enforcement to alert the public of her disappearance.

On Tuesday, February 13, a post to CBPD's Facebook page requested the public's help locating Michael Gene Still.

Still was last seen on Tuesday, February 6 at Colony West Apartments.

In an updated post on February 20, officials responded to questions about speculation that Hogg's and Still's case are related.

The Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office has been actively investigating the disappearance of Michael Still who was last seen on February 6, 2024 at his apartment in Colony West. BCSO has used multiple resources from other agencies in our search for Still. Though there is no concrete evidence that Still’s disappearance is related to Malayshia Hogg, we continue to work closely with Barnwell Police Dept. to share information and follow all leads.

Just adding some updated articles for Maylashia and baby Londyn Charity. Latest update- SLED establishes a tip line, listed at bottom of post.

'They do not care': Ex-officer fights for answers in pregnant teen's death, searches for missing people of color

Kimberly Kite spent five years working in law enforcement before cutting ties, frustrated with the lack of urgency authorities showed in finding missing people of color.

Based in South Carolina, she says she’s all too familiar with the “good ol’ boy” mentality, where citizens are overlooked and treated as if their lives are less valuable than others simply because they’re Black.

Kite said she quit the force 14 years ago so she could help families in ways they truly need her assistance.

“It wasn't the help I wanted to give people,” Kite told USA TODAY on Feb. 28, adding that she didn’t want to focus on giving people tickets and making arrests for the sake of doing it. (story continued at link)

Jacqueline Reid, 62, of Barnwell, S.C., was arrested on Monday (July 1, 2024) and charged with two counts of murder in the death of Maylashia Hogg and her unborn daughter. Hogg was scheduled to be induced with a baby girl on February 13, 2024. She planned to name her daughter London Charity after her late mother.

Those plans met a violent end, however.

"No matter where you live, no matter where you're from, everybody in this state deserves an equal level of law enforcement service,” said SLED Chief Mark Keel in the news release. “Every case is important, and every victim deserves justice.”

Wondering what the motive could be for a much older woman to kill a teenager, there's this from the article:
Ja'Nearia Rice, Hogg’s cousin, told USA TODAY Tuesday that Reid had been spending time with the family as recently as last week.

According to Rice, her cousin once lived across the street from the defendant. They’ve also had altercations in the past, Rice said.

Could the motive be jealousy related? Maybe Jacqueline was jealous of Maylashia's youth and being a new mother? I think Jacqueline's age kind of rules out a "womb robbing" (fetal abduction) motive. MOO.

Pretty sure there have been cases of foetal abduction where the attacker was past childbearing age. Clarisa Figueroa comes immediately to mind.

MOO

Also "altercations in the past" as I quoted above suggest it might predate the pregnancy, by an uncertain but possibly considerable length of time.
One possibility: Does Jacqueline have children (and grandchildren), and Maylashia running in the same crowd with her grandkids be the source of the conflict somehow?
MOO

The suspect, Jacqueline Reid, faced a court appearance on Tuesday where she was denied bond. During the hearing, Reid told the judge, “I don’t wanna talk to you,” while Hogg’s grieving family looked on.
