Cold case detectives' message ahead of anniversary of man's murder in Bradford

Detectives investigating a man's murder more than 40 years ago have issued a renewed call for help ahead of the anniversary of his death.

''James 'Jimmy' Adams had just finished his shift as a glass collector at the New Beehive pub
He said his goodbyes and headed for home - but the 46-year-old would never make it.
''Instead of walking directly to his flat in Heaton Road, Manningham, Mr Adams stopped at a block of public toilets at the junction of Carlisle Road and Bavaria Place.
Eyewitnesses spotted another man follow him into the darkness and moments later heard screams coming from the public toilets.''

''Mr Adams stumbled out into the street and collapsed as the suspect walked out behind him, still holding the Bowie knife used to stab his victim 22 times.''

''The suspect was described as a white male, between 5ft 6 inches and 5ft 8 inches tall, of a medium build, with dirty blonde collar length hair. He was wearing distinctive thick "bottle bottom" glasses.
At the time, witnesses suggested the man looked to be around 25 to 35 years old. This would place the suspect between the ages of 67 to 77 today.
A witness described him as looking like the singer John Denver.''

Cold Case Files: Killer of James 'Jimmy' Adams left a mile-long trail of his own blood

IT was almost 12.30am when James 'Jimmy' Adams finished his shift as a glass collector at the New Beehive pub on Tuesday, May 26, 1981.

'Not only had the murderer dumped his knife in a drain 500 yards away, he had also left a mile-long trail of his own blood.
''Three men also came face to face with the "short-sighted" killer just seconds after the frenzied attack.
They later told detectives he looked like the American country singer John Denver - and wore distinctive thick "bottle bottom" glasses.

At the time, police said they believed the suspects eyesight was so poor that without glasses "he would not be able to pick up a pint in a pub."

''Detectives re-opened the case 22-years after the murder, in 2003, when new DNA evidence was uncovered.
Advances in technology had allowed police to build up a profile using material recovered by their predecessors.''

''James had left the New Beehive Inn, Westgate in the city centre shortly after midnight, he was followed along Carlisle Road by a man who we believe is the suspect.
Witnesses heard screams coming from the public toilets, then the suspect was seen running from the scene.
Three witnesses confronted the suspect at Marlborough Garage, the suspect threatened them with a knife before running off.
James was taken to hospital with 22 stab wounds, he later died from this injuries''.
