Crime scene officers soon arrived at the property after a sniffer dog drew about a dozen police to the dam’s banks.

A television camera captured a pair of police officers then donning masks, laying down a yellow evidence marker and photographing a phone.
Shortly after 4pm, a police diver entered the dam to search for Murphy’s body.

Snipped …

Paywalled for some, but also free ..

Divers entering the damn at 4pm, when sunset is 5.15pm is very promising in my opinion. I'm not sure how deep the dam is currently, but an article mentioned it had receded several metres over recent times. Perhaps it's not that deep that they can search the entire dam before sunset? Fingers crossed.

7news: water levels in the dam are at the lowest in a while.

Maybe the items were spotted by a farmer or passer-by?
Goes a long way in explaining why the dogs did not originally pick up scent. This goes for Samantha 's body, as well .. underwater, underground... I don't know how much rain Ballarat shire has had these last few months, but not much, I am guessing, , winter rains have not begun, everyone's dam is a bit down .

So, if it is indeed Samantha's phone, I don't understand why that dam wasn't thoroughly searched from top to bottom earlier, however deep, given that is where it last pinged?

I could be wrong, but I recall reading the cell tower covered quite a large area near Buninyong, so it would be hard to narrow down a specific spot to search.
