A 3-year-old boy stabbed by a woman in a grocery store parking lot in Ohio has died in what investigators believe was a random attack, police said. The boy's mother was injured during the attack.

The boy and his mother were going back to their vehicle after shopping at the Giant Eagle grocery on Monday when a woman ran at them with a knife, stabbing both of them, police said.

North Olmsted police said Bionca Ellis, 32, of Cleveland, was taken into custody without resistance and transported to the North Olmsted Jail.

Ellis is charged with aggravated murder and had her initial appearance via video in Rocky River Municipal Court Tuesday afternoon.

Her attorney demanded a preliminary hearing, which the judge scheduled for Monday [June 10] at 10:30 a.m.

Ellis’s bond was set at $1 million. Additional charges will be added once the case is presented to the Cuyahoga County Grand Jury, said police.

Ellis, who is known to the North Olmsted police department for previous theft charges, was taken into custody without incident.

She has no known violent criminal history.

Hard to believe no one called the cops on her. She clearly has mental health issues, as demonstrated by her giggling during her arraignment and refusing to answer the judge.

The judge set bail as high as she could -- $5 million dollars. The father of the slain child's statement is heartbreaking.

She won't do well in prison, if she even gets there. The resolution of this case might be indefinite confinement in a mental ward, after 5-7 years of motions, hearings, and other assorted court delays. JMO, but in a just world someone like this would be taken out and shot forthwith. /rant off

Yes, even though she smirked and laughed during significant portions of the arraignment, it will take years. Sadly, some so called experts just can't grasp that sometimes people kill because they choose to, not because they are legally insane at the time. amoo

aimoo, she stole the knife from a store nearby and followed behind this Mom and her precious boy as they went into the grocery store. She watched them walk out, and then she attacked. That seems very methodical, requiring planning, and not the disordered thinking of someone in the throes of a mental break. No one failed this woman, as her mother contends. She failed herself. She failed society. And she failed her Mom, who I'm certain did not raise her up this way. amoo

I think it's the right call.

I know there are a lot of times where people invent or play up symptoms to try and avoid responsibility, but I don't think so, in this case. I think she needs to be somewhere where she's kept out of society but is getting the treatment she clearly needs.

I think the mother of little Cairo is the same. Her hearing after she was arrested was really something, as was the letter she sent to the judge.
