A new volunteer private investigator working with the Englebert family has recently generated new information that may help fill in some of the holes of Englebert’s last steps before his phone went dark.

The investigator, who asked to be identified by his company name RD Investigations, has spoken to a former clerk at a convenience store in Scottsbluff who claims to have seen Englebert in the store time between 8:30 and 9 p.m. before the brunt of the storm hit.

The store was about 2 miles from where Englebert was last seen on surveillance video in Terrytown.

The clerk said it had been raining lightly at that point and he distinctly remembered Englebert because the top of his shirt was wet with rain, according to the private investigator.

He further told the investigator that he thought he saw Englebert having a “tense conversation” with another man in the back of the store prior to Englebert buying tobacco and a Monster energy drink.

As he rang up Englebert’s purchases, the man he thought Englebert had been talking to in the back of the store was being helped at a second register by a co-worker, the investigator stated.

The clerk told him he distinctly remembered carding Englebert for the tobacco and the fact that he was from South Dakota. Chance grew up on his family’s ranch in Edgemont, South Dakota, and never switched his driver’s license.

The clerk told RD Investigations he recalled teasing Englebert about “crazy people from South Dakota” being out in a Nebraska storm.

The clerk told the investigator that Englebert said that he’d been in an argument with his wife and needed to take a walk, but had cooled off and was heading back now. The clerk praised him for his level-headedness in handling the situation, the private investigator said.

The clerk saw the other man hop into an unidentified vehicle but couldn’t provide details or what it looked like, or if Englebert got into the vehicle with him or took off on foot.

He was too preoccupied with the sudden storm rolling in — thunder booming, lightning flashing and heavy rain pouring down – to the point where it later caused a power outage in town.

Two Females Running

The second new lead RD Investigations uncovered was a sighting of two women in their mid-20s running alongside the road near Five Rocks and Stable Club roads around 9 p.m., within a mile vicinity of the store in which Englebert was allegedly last seen.

The two women were “frantically calling out for assistance,” according to the private investigator, who said witnesses described them as “so beautiful they looked like models.”

IF TRUE this part of the report is the most interesting to me.
The clerk told the investigator that Englebert said that he’d been in an argument with his wife and needed to take a walk, but had cooled off and was heading back now.

Why wouldn't the clerk come forward with this information sometime in the past five years? Why wait till someone finds you and asks you?
LE must have an incident report about the two young women who needed help. Who reported that?
I have always wondered if Chance had turned left onto Five Rocks and gone down a block or two and tried to hop a train back home.

That is interesting. If accurate, in my amateur opinion, it further supports the foul play theory. Chance’s BF Matt has reinforced he doesn’t think CE perished outdoors on his own, as he was an experienced outdoorsman. My hinky meter is now reactivated. Time for another round of interviews, with State Police or FBI leading. This stinks to high heaven.

So sad. :(

"The tragedy has also torn the two families apart, and the Engleberts have not seen their grandson since their son disappeared."

This is just very concerning to me. Is this actually true? If so, why?

I suspect because Chance’s family, mainly his mom, has accused the child’s mother of being involved and/or her family of being involved in his disappearance. They don’t seemed to have ever liked her. I think she’s (B) been treated unfairly. These were two young people without emotional maturity. I’m not surprised there’s a split and the child is being kept away. Imo

It’s been five years since Chance Englebert, a newlywed and father from Wyoming, disappeared while with his family in Nebraska. Now, a new lead has surfaced with the possibility that Englebert was seen at a Nebraska store. Ryan Daniel, a private investigator on the case, joins "NewsNation Live" to discuss.

Private investigator Ryan Daniel told “NewsNation Live” that the lead confirmed Englebert was walking out in the storm and having a tense conversation while at the back of the store. The man alleged to be Englebert purchased a drink and tobacco.

“If he did leave the store between 8:30 and 9 p.m. that night, that would put him down there in that area, which we believe – not only the area of incident, but the area of time,” Daniel said. “Chance’s disappearance is focused on between nine and 9:15 p.m.”

A second lead is also being explored after a witness contacted the tip line saying two women in their mid-20s were seen in a state of panic and attempted to stop traffic in the vicinity Englebert had previously been, before being picked up by a truck.

I 1000% think his wife and family know what happened to him... whether they were involved or not. MOO. The latest lead from the convenience store makes me believe that more strongly. If the lead wasn't accurate, it'd be strange that the clerk would correctly guess Chance had a South Dakota driver's license.

What if he did go home? Home, as in back to where his wife and child were. Thought provoking and a new wrinkle in her story to investigate. I think they'll now investigate this angle. It'll be interesting to see where it leads. Maybe some things will start to fall apart, or fall into place, depending on your perspective.

But how would they know?

According to the clerk, he bought tobacco. Guessing that would require ID. The clerk would probably remember an out of state ID, if that's not common in the area.
Yes, it said he bought tobacco and a drink. He carded him for the tobacco.

Over the years participating and observing many threads, I’ve learned how to weigh probabilities, and have become very practical in my speculations. That disclaimer aside, this case is defying my practical and logical approach. Everything points to an untimely demise; perhaps misadventure, perhaps foul play. The case for both seem equally weighted.

Yet, I can’t shake a tiny niggling thought that this fellow just walked off the grid, and is quietly working on a remote ranch with a big beard so no one would be the wiser. Ranch folk aren’t talkers anyhow.

Completely illogical given what we know, but I can’t shake the possibility.
