The body was found in a very inaccessible part of the island.

Spanish police believe this man had fallen down a chasm or a drop in the island - that is what made it so difficult to find the body.

The area is full of drops and has thick vegetation.

Drones, sniffer dogs and personnel were used on the ground in the search and we had been led to believe it looked as if it was going to be impossible to find the missing you Briton due to the difficult terrain.

Close to his last phone ping the whole time though :( You would think they would have drones down the inaccessible areas from the start. I dont know. Maybe he was too hidden. Very sad. RIP young man.

Early evidence suggests teen fell - police

More from the Spanish police statement:

"Initial evidence shows he could have suffered an accident/fall in the inaccessible zone where he was found," it says.
"Civil guard agents belonging to the mountain rescue and intervention unit have found this morning the body of a young man in the Masca area, in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, in Tenerife."

Evidence suggests body is missing British teenager - Spanish police

Spanish police have released a statement after discovering a body in Tenerife.
“The Civil Guard mountain rescue and intervention unit has found, after 29 days of non-stop searching, the body of a young man in the Masca area," it says.
"Given the difficulties of the case, the discovery has been possible thanks to the constant and discreet search carried out by the Civil Guard for the last 29 days during which care was taken to ensure curious onlookers did not fill the area.
"All the evidence suggests, with full identification still pending, that this is the young British man who disappeared on 17 June."

So it would seem the announcement that they were abandoning the search was something of a ruse by the Spanish police, to enable them to carry on searching without all the media hoo-har.

Body found alongside Jay Slater's possessions, charity says

BREAKING

NEW

The body found in the Masca area of Tenerife was located with Jay Slater's possessions and clothes, according to British overseas missing persons charity LBT Global.

"It is understood the body was found close to the site of his mobile phone’s last location," it says in a statement.

The group says it's supporting his family, adding that a post-mortem examination and formal identification of the remains will take place.

Drones won't be able to see something entiely covered by vegetation which I'm assuming Jay was in the same way that human searchers can easily miss something. It's been said more than once in the threads that there are multiple previous cases of bodies not being found initially when the later on being found on a further search very near to earlier ones.

why only start up on the day the specialists were going in though?

RIP Jay

This was the best possible outcome in the end - there was never going to be a positive outcome unfortunately

At least his family now know what happened for certain and won’t have to live with the unknown possibility that Jay is still alive for rest of their lives.

My thoughts go out to his family & friends especially to his mum who has been trolled relentlessly with horrible conspiracy theories since day one.

"Police said in a statement that the Civil Guard's mountain rescue group had located the

'lifeless body of a young man in the Masca area after 29 days of constant search'.

They added:
'Given the complexity of the case,
the discovery has been possible thanks to the incessant and discreet search carried out by the Civil Guard during these 29 days.

Parts of the countryside were 'preserved'
so they were
'not filled with curious onlookers'.

All indications indicate that it could be the young British man who has been missing since June 17 - in the absence of full identification.

The first investigations reveal he could have suffered an accident fall in the inaccessible area where he was found.

We are awaiting the results of the autopsy'."

Gracias Guardia Civil.

I think we all expected this to be the outcome. I’m not sure if they’ll tell the public if he had a watch/knives on him or if we will ever know why he felt unable to go back to the B&B (if indeed he did, it could be as Lucy said, he didn’t know where he was)

At least his family don’t have to go through years of sighting of him on a beach in the Caribbean or something now.
