The leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel, Mexico's largest drug ring, was arrested by federal authorities in Texas on Thursday, officials say.
Ismael Zambada Garcia, also known as "El Mayo," has been on the run from authorities for years but was arrested in El Paso, Texas, the Justice Department said in a statement.
“The Justice Department has taken into custody two additional alleged leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.
Zambada founded the notorious Sinaloa Cartel with now-jailed Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán in 1987 and quickly became one of the DEA's most wanted criminals.
The agency had initially offered a $5 million reward in 2016 for information leading to his capture but later tripled it to $15 million in 2021.
