It's a bit difficult to explain, but what I picture in my mind isn't so much John wanting to train Fang.

Because he wrote the texts saying they should start a business together, where they would take Chinese tourists out to the desert and he would teach them survival skills, I picture him wanting to show Fang the desert and show her some of the skills he told her about.

Less about training her, more about wanting to impress her. Completely innocent, should have been harmless fun, but unfortunate circumstances turned it into something else.
I can absolutely see this happening. If he was trying to drive up there to just show her around since it was so hot, maybe something happened with the truck and they were unable to drive it out so they got out to walk or to try to get cell signal by moving around and then things just went down hill.

I can totally see a man who had served his country in the way he did retiring and then not really finding his place in the civilian world or struggling to do so. Then having some relationship and personal problems with the restraining orders and the divorce and things we've heard about and then having alcohol problems.. then meeting a woman and trying to change things around. I can actually see a scenario where he really was changed, off alcohol, trying to have a fresh start, meets Fang and thinks she's amazing, successful, and just wanting to show her a good time, impress her and then things just went wrong with the record heat and perhaps the truck being stuck or tires going flat and then they can't make calls out for help so they are in big trouble fast.

I've been thinking about this lovely lady recently. I searched, but have not found any recent articles or updates.

I hope we, but more importantly, her family and loved ones, get the answers about what happened to her someday.
Her spirit still inspires us everyday....

Just checking to see if there were any updates & to let the loved ones of Fang & John get answers & know that they are still remembered by others too.
Honestly I think now that we know they are both deceased, there will be no updates. Many people believe they were lost to the elements and it'll be left at that. Short of additional resources to do extra forensics (too late?), I don't think the public will know any more. Sad for the young daughters...

3 men dead in Grand Canyon, from heat, in the past month as well.

And 1 in Death Valley.

Thunderstorm/errant weather related death on Yosemite's Half Dome in the last few days. The heat in the Valley and the cold air up above didn't mix well and there was an unseasonable summer hail storm.

People often think that all they need is water, to beat the heat. Water is of course essential, but will not protect you from gradually rising body temperatures if it's hot enough.

Have you seen the 3-word location system? This might possibly have made it easier for SAR folks to find those in distress who can send a phone signal.

The what3words system has broken the entire earth's surface, including the oceans, into 3 m square blocks and given each one of them a unique set of 3 words. It sends those three words as coordinates to people if they have the app installed. Used commonly in the UK for first responders, it is popular because of the simplicity of finding the 3 words on a map. It does not completely replace GPS, clearly, and GPS coordinates can still be used, but it is handy for quick reference on a grid to know where to head in a search. My house, garage, and driveway between then have 10 different 3 word sets. When I click the app and chose a recipient, it sends the coordinates with a map of where I am to whomever I chose.

I think about the lost people we read about here that could have used them to send to their friends without having to figure out how to send GPS coordinates.

Both autopsies remain sealed. Why?

"In California, autopsy reports are considered investigatory records during an investigation. This means that they are exempt from California's Public Records Act during that time. However, coroners and other records custodians can choose to disclose them."

I'm guessing the case is not closed and they are still investigating?

I was just looking at Jin Fang's photo in the car with John Fitzpatrick and realized Jin Fang was in the driver's seat. I found it a bit unusual that if Fitzpatrick was a hired guide, shouldn't he be driving, considering that he would be the one having a US driver's license and also more familiar with the terrain and how to drive locally?

The picture was reversed.

We went over this in the beginning and as @sassyblue says .. we all realised the Selfie was reversed, making it look like she is in the driver's seat when she was not. What a sad case- none if it makes sense.
