Hi everyone, I know it's been a while but updates have been slow to come by. I've been looking at local news articles but I can't find any mention of this case after 1981 so far. Somebody named Erika Marie who runs the site "Our Black Girls" did an article about this Doe a few months ago if anyone is interested: Calumet City Jane Doe Was Strangled & Left In The Woods In 1981 (warning for postmortem photo)

Despite no new information about the Jane Doe case, I did come across a potential match that looks promising. This is Sheila Cooks:

Cooks, circa 1979

  • Missing Since 05/17/1979
  • Missing From Austin, Texas
  • Classification Endangered Missing
  • Sex Female
  • Race Black
  • Date of Birth 08/14/1960 (60)
  • Age 18 years old
  • Height and Weight 5'3, 95 pounds
  • Clothing/Jewelry Description A white shirt and blue jeans.
  • Distinguishing Characteristics African-American female. Black hair, brown eyes. Cooks's ears are pierced.
Cooks suddenly vanished from Austin, Texas in 1979. Although her height does not quite match this Jane Doe, she is the closest facial match I have seen so far. I submitted her as a potential match to NamUs a few weeks ago but have heard nothing since (I also submitted Beverly Ann Bealer to the Doe Network as a match, but I don't know if they ever contacted anyone else about that). There still have not been any rule-outs on her.

Great job @cory6010! Thank you for the updates!

I don't know if this will be helpful, but, her short hair really stands out to me. I don't recall really short hair being in fashion in 1981. The 1970's were full of natural big hair, and then with the 1980's came the straight/relaxed hair in bobs.
So, I'm wondering why the short hair? Institutional? Or did she always wear wigs?

Hello everyone. I've been looking around but have not found any more news articles about this case yet. I'm hoping to do a FOIA request for her files and see if maybe there's some more useful information that hadn't been released to the public already.

In the meantime, there is a missing person I think might be worth submitting as a match. It's a long shot, but some new photos of her were released recently that made me wonder if they could be the same person. She was abducted from her home in the middle of the night and I wonder if she could have been taken out of state. She might have been trafficked or ended up by herself at some point and didn't have a way to get home. I don't want to speculate too much, but I thought she would at least be worth ruling out as a match to miss Cal.

I do think facially that she's a good contender, but her supernumerary digit is giving me pause...If she still had it at 13 years old, it must not have been easy to remove (the description makes me believe it contains bones and isn't just a nubbin). It would have had to be done surgically. If she was being trafficked, would they have taken the chance by seeking out surgical treatment?

For those confused about the description, I believe this is similar to what Beverly has. You rarely see kids with supernumerary digits anymore because it's usually removed in infancy, but the removal is complicated based on what structures are actually included in the extra finger.
