Looks like he was choked based on the postmortem photo. IMO, a Kraft victim and not from the the area, possibly a runaway. Is there a autopsy report to rule out an OD? So many questions and speculation on my part.
I don't recall the case being nationwide, maybe on Unsolved Mysteries, but I didn't hear about this case until I was an adult. I do hope this was a gag photo, but you never know. VC Andrew's was very popular in the early 90s, but I don't recommend the books, too dark.
Imo, JP seemed to be covering up his tracks. If you are not guilty, why try to cover your tracks. I don't recall any remorse from JP on what happened to his former student. Is Roger's sister still around? I recall her posting on here many years ago.
I checked out the Alchetron link and I find it interesting that the jewelry was not taken. Was this a thrill kill? What was the motive? Also, they found a guy that had the gun that was used in murders, but could not press charges. Who was this guy? So many questions, but I hope they found out...
Yes, there are people that lived there from time to time, but there are lots of hills and canyons in the area. In my opinion, I think it was the work of a serial killer that never was caught.
Brea police may have still been in that jurisdiction and they have had at least one drug sting gone bad. Also, the body dumps in that area are near Featherly Regional Park, where one can camp out in their Rv. In the 80s to early 90s, this area was still growing, so night body dumps were possible.

Led me to this YouTube link, but I honestly don't think it's the actual recording. What do you think? The video states police had recordings of the caller .
Very sad to see Dorothy's photos, but a very good and accurate write up about the case. I wonder why there wasn't further investigation into Mike Butler and his sister. I also wonder where in Santa Ana the car was found.
