Maybe judging from the state of the remains found. If they were remains from a victim from an earlier abduction/murder there would be more tell tale signs of it being so, like moss, dirt collecting on the sides, plant material... etc. From what the officer said on a video report, the remains...

Having religious friends doesn't mean someone identifies themselves as being religious. If his family is religious, then its possible that these are acquaintances were known from just doing the family thing to do- going to church, socializing.
