I'm in farm country in the midwest and don't know of any farmers who detassel here. My understanding is that only corn grown for seed gets detassled.

You make a really good point. Mollie sounds like a very social and outgoing girl with a lot of friends, so it makes sense that she would have been in contact with people other than her mom and her boyfriend that night.
