I like that this news report presented one version of the BG audio with pauses added in (roughly 1:20 in the video). I always found the original continuous loop (with no break) to be overwhelming. The pause gives your brain a second to ingest the sample.

Thanks to Bemused for posting links to those videos last night! It was like hitting a reset button! :back:

Interesting. Maybe they didn't have all the video. There could've been more than one clip and they had to wait for password access to the phone (if they have the phone) or permission from someone to be able to access the video. I don't know enough about Snapchat to even speculate on whether...

:goodpost:This is exactly why I don't buy into any of the cloning/photoshopping conspiracy theories. It's all about appealing to someone who knows this person already. It's amazing how humans can recognize someone they know based on subtle factors, such as posture. IMO

Exactly. They probably cropped it, enlarged it, brightened it a bit, sharpened it a bit and I can't see evidence of anything else. I only see evidence of cruddy video, which is exactly what phones make. IMO

Are we discussing cloning, blurring conspiracy again? Sorry, I can't keep up with all the posts. If we are, then shadows are exactly the reason the areas look blurred when lightened up, because it's shadow, so the camera tosses out that info when it's compressed. Highly compressed images aren't...

So they cloned out blood from his jeans, but left most of it?

JMO and I won't mention again.... I think this whole 'altered' BG photo is a red herring. Compressed video (especially in lower light) can look like this or worse. Don't forget your looking at a small crop with enlarged pixels. On top of that, it was probably very soft, so it was sharpened...

Goodnight everyone! It's been an interesting weekend of discussion! I hope we'll see justice for Libby and Abby soon. :bed:

Do you mean the way he appears to be moving awkwardly? There's been some discussion of that and speculation IIRC that he's pigeon-toed or just walking awkwardly because of the huge gaps in the bridge.

Compression can look a lot like cloning artifacts, though, especially in under-exposed video. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I believe there's no way to definitively tell LE did any such thing. Personally, based on my own work experience, we're just looking at a perfect example of how...

Yes you're exactly right! Many consumer cameras use what's called Long-GOP compression for video. GOP = Group of Frames. One frame in a sequence will be the keyframe, which is a full and complete frame. Another keframe might not arrive until maybe 10 frames later. All the frames in between are...

Just for the record, I wasn't judging its importance, but was only speculating on why LE didn't adjust it! I think Lilibet's comments a few posts back (#467) are excellent (LE may not have even known how to fix it and/or are hesitant to tamper with potential evidence)

My guess is this area is very soft because of compression (detail is thrown out by the camera's encoder to reduce file size). The picture had probably been brightened quite a bit from the original and my guess is these areas are darker from shadows. It's common for highly compressed video to...

That sounds exactly like rolling shutter, then. You're seeing motion from one frame stitched together with motion from the next or previous frame. So, objects in motion would appear more skewed than objects that aren't. I hope it's ok to post an example picture. This shows exactly what I'm...

Sometimes trying to "fix" something like that can lead one down a rabbit hole and you end up with something that looks weird in many other ways. I'm guessing LE attempts to leave something as close to the original unless they've got very good reason to make a change. In this case, it looks like...

I don't think so, IMO. It distorts lines, but usually in certain portions of the frame, not the entire frame. If anything, he'd end up looking warped a bit due to rolling shutter, but the camera would have to be moving pretty fast. However if he was taking a step AND the camera was moving, I can...

Yes, one always needs a reference! Otherwise, it's almost impossible to know what's right or wrong in this case. You've got a good eye for this IMO! The dark streak (the 'abby jacket') always looked like a cloning artifact to me, as if they were stamping or erasing something out and that streak...
