After looking at Google maps, my opinion is he was parked at the cemetery which is why he made them cross the river. He could access the front of the bridge through the woods and then make it back to his car without raising suspicion with wet or bloody clothes. I am sticking with my original...

You may have just figured out why they crossed the river. There were people looking for them but not until late afternoon, near sunset I would guess. No one would try to cross the water in the dark imo. As for pinging, it's your phone sending out a "hello, I am here" signal out to cell towers...
