Great images of the van in that link. Didn't appreciate you can see straight through from the cab into the back. Sure enough the photo I grabbed from Calico's Wikipedia page is a low gen version (double click on it over there and it gives you details) There is an even clearer version here...

I think the item behind the boys head is a black/gray holdall/gymbag. Had a look around the web, and it looks remarkably like a Nike holdall from that era:
