This was the route I was thinking...

Pasadena, CA, USA to Buckeye, AZ, USA
4 h 54 min [4 h 41 min without traffic]
(344 miles) via I-10 E
Buckeye, AZ, USA to Mesa, AZ, USA
56 min [55 min without traffic]...
Does that still hold if she did stop and fill up in Buckeye as she had testified? Granted she had said she'd stopped in Desert Center(CA) too but perhaps it was already closed, or she got scared stopping so late at night in such a desolate place(see Maran's site), or she initially thought she...
Unless she topped up in Buckeye with cash and didn't save her receipts? There is the possibility that she did run out of gas somewhere in the desert and was "rescued" by someone with an extra can of gas... maybe she traded that case of water for it.;)
I came across a hitch with the Arizona Last Stop theory ... apparently it didn't open until 2010(I'm still trying to find out what if anything may have been there before, though pretty much anywhere she could have pulled over in White Hills could be a contender, since that seems to fit the cell...
Anyone still conversant enough with all the other details to see if this place fits? I keep getting confused between all the calls, gas, miles, time frame... while trying to keep in mind that she may or may not have still had enough blood visible to have made a well lit public place too...
Do you have to drive over at the checkpoints for Hoover Dam or is that somewhat north of the main hwy? I've never been that far south and east, just to Las Vegas, Tijuana... the usual Canadian roadtrip. ;)
I just came across this info again, could she have called from the Arizona Last Stop if that was just after the turnoff to Dolan Springs?

Answering my own question after reviewing the video testimony from 5:00-6:40, they play the recorded call for a second time for the jury at 14:25, it's much clearer the second time:

According to this one map, if you go east on 93 at the 93/95 junction, then north on Lakeshore Rd, you can bypass Las Vegas and have a handy lake on your right which would definitely allow for pings hitting any towers on the east side of the lake, which would still be south of the AZ border...
When I was searching out the routes there were also maps that showed the cell towers, they seemed to be few and far between(possibly due to how much of the land seemed to be reserve), which would explain why you might ping off one that you would never expect.
Does the mileage and time add up if she got as far as the Hoover signs, chickened out and drove all the way back and around? She was very late getting to SLC iirc, plus that would explain needing gas again by Mesquite I think... but no, I think it might be possible to ping from 95 to a tower on...
That route also had opportunities for a number of places to shower, but I still think she likely got onto 40, went to Havasu to get cleaned up(for old times sake, plus she was familiar with the area) then up 95 to at least Laughlin. After that who knows, maybe she got turned around there...
You forgot to mention the victim's purse that the murderer's sister stole from the crime scene(with whatever the murderer may have popped into it for disposal ...ie. cellphone/shell casings, when his legal advisor, friend, neighbour and accomplice to the theft heard him walking on the tile in...
BBM - I found the next bit from that link as disturbing as this practice to send a successfully appealed case back to the same judge who had already displayed such egregious errors in their initial judgement.
