I think if you look at Tuesday Sept. 16th it's clear that LE learned who JM was and realized he matched the sketch from the MH case (I believe it was LE that re-released the sketch. The "sighting" was a fib.) On Wednesday Sept 17th Hannah's parents are telling the media they fear foul play. :(

I don't know what her intent was with the photos, but I don't think she planned on dropping it during the murder. I think that's what probably caused her to delete the photos and throw the camera in the washing machine.
