I think the gun is one of the most compelling and important elements of this case. Common sense would dictate that LE is not going to rely on ballistics tests that were carried out over 40 years ago, since I would assume that could be a great attack point for a defense attorney to go after. I...
Hopefully LE has/will send that gun to be tested again using modern techniques.
There have been more than a few cases in recent years where old ballistics tests used to convict people were found to have been flawed and resulted in their convictions being overturned. It would be interesting to...
MM has done a tremendous amount of work to further the case along which is commendable. Since he was invited to speak at the press conference, we can only assume that the SCSO approves of whatever public remarks he is making (?). It could also be a strategy to (my theory here) put the fear of...
It's important to remember that the child support enforcement system was pretty non-existent on a national level in 1976. That only came into being when technology ramped up in the 1990s along with welfare reforms. Before that time, men could easily take off, start new families and not support...
Exactly.
And let's not forget, this was the summer of the bicentennial. People were traveling like crazy all over and there were events going on everywhere. It would not have been unusual to see people on the road that summer. Also the Vietnam War had just ended and a lot of Vets had taken to...
You are so right about this. In my experience, used clothing stores were found in more urban areas like NYC or Los Angeles, where hippie chic was a thing and many of the clothes sold were antique. Truly used clothing really came into it's heydey during the punk era of the late 70s and early 80s...
Those wedge sandals were a super popular look back then. Also chunky sandals with cork bottoms (Cork-eze- which were resurrected a few years ago) Famolare, wave-y soled wedges and also Bare Traps which were chunky wood. I haven't seen any detailed images of the shoes, but my guess is that they...
I am frankly doubtful about them being hitchhikers. The reason is because the reports on the case details indicate the tire tracks at the scene likely belonged to a van. It is possible the van was theirs (maybe a camper van?) and they were sleeping in it at campgrounds and then staying in motels...
Ditto! I've been following this case for a long time but have only had time intermittantly to come back here to check up on it! Kudos to those who stuck with it!
Super good observations here. I think with any situation like this, it's all about ruling things out. It's very possible that James WAS the man at the campground, and that for his own reasons, he had a cover story. My gut feeling is that this case is going to get much more interesting as time...
I have always felt there might be a racing connection to this case. James was wearing that race T-shirt from Florida, remember? The reason why the campground story seemed plausible was because the man at the campground allegedly told the owner that he had traveled to/from Florida.
