NY - Captured, escaped convicted killers, David Sweat & Richard Matt, Dannemora #9

The hired assassin who blew Matt's head to bits, could easily have shot the gun out of his drunken hands, and then shot him non-fatally. He was supposedly a crack shot. Like the local LE guy did with Sweat.

Right. They were both bad apples. No doubt. But as far as I know, Matt was spared the death penalty. And I do not believe they were out to kill anyone. The reason no one was hurt physically was NOT because LE did such a great job. No one was hurt physically BECAUSE M&S DID NOT CHOOSE...

NY - Captured, escaped convicted killers, David Sweat & Richard Matt, Dannemora #9

Matt was essentially incapable of killing the Feds who killed him. The reports were that he didn't aim the rifle at them; he was too drunk to do anything but stare at them like a deer in the headlights. I do not know why they couldn't have blasted the gun out of his hands then shot him in the...

MM - I had much the same reaction. It's like the LE officer on the rt. with his arm resting on his knee in Sweats photo, looks like a hunter who just bagged a deer. Nice... I think Lyle said it best after Matt's head was blown to bits - he said something to the effect that it was a tragic...

Not really. They got M&S. Period. As far as it being a good job. I don't think it was. And it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of these crack LE people are not real proud of the job they did, especially when you add up the cost, etc. <modsnip>

It's nice to read a post with a little compassion.

Are you kidding? How was it a good job after 3 weeks? I'd say the two escapees did a better job staying away from the 1000 or so LE after them.

I'm getting confused with all this signature stuff. Didn't a previous post say that the note to Oprah on her painting looked like Sweats writing??

I think you are onto to something. The breakout was the easy part, staying out and on the lam, took a lot of planning. The elaborate nature of the escape tells me that the "staying escaped" part was just as elaborate and thought through.

Sweat is the painter according to former Clinton inmate Erik ???? I believe it was on AC that he stated that Sweat would do the painting and Matt would then use them for barter or whatever.

Easily said but who knows? MOST of the inmates he probably interacted with wouldn't go as far as M and S.

Just a random thought: We have no real understanding of what it is like to be a prison worker. At first, they are gung ho and abide by the do's and don'ts of interacting with the inmates. Eventually, even the baddest of the bad inmate will show some kindness, some type of humanity, and it's...

He probably has a cabin too. They might have gone there before things got hot. Matt could have buffaloed this poor schlub into doing a lot of things knowing he was at a vulnerable place with a sick wife, etc. He doesn't strike me as Mensa material. Sorry to be harsh, but .....

Right on Dr. Watson - a civil attorney told me once that he would never get into criminal law because you are dealing with criminals and it is dangerous to your mental/emotional wellbeing. Same for a lot (not all!) CO's and LE types.
