That turn of phrase bothered me, too. Might be accidental, or even written down wrong, but it's curious!

OH OH - Ruth Baumgardner, 21, Delaware, 4 May 1937

It definitely was, but what makes me think there is a good deal of truth is that the article had nothing to do with Ruth, it was just mentioned as a BTW, relating to another case. The facts may vary some, but to me, it seems the most likely, and only "documented" (give or take) solution so...

OH OH - Ruth Baumgardner, 21, Delaware, 4 May 1937

A number of years ago, in a previous thread about Ruth, a sleuther posted a clip from a newspaper. It was a report from a state police officer. It said Ruth had been found in Philadelphia, in a sex slave situation. She had been kidnapped & sold to a brothel. When found, she was returned to...

LE did not believe he had anything to do with it, and since the husband/boyfriend is generally the immediate suspect, I tend to think Martin had no involvement.

Yes, but there is a difference in the amount of force needed to rip a handset out, and to rip an entire phone from the wall. As a small child, I actually "ripped" the handset from my parents phone playing with it. It's not a pop out, as we have now, but it doesn't require a lot of strength...

But the Original report proves differently. I suspect it just sounded more exciting to the ones writing about it. :)

One of the problems is it suggests so many things, all possible, and none with proof. If it weren't for her disappearance, I'd be likely to go with miscarriage or some similar event, but vanishing into thin air seems to rule that out

But the phone wasn't ripped from the wall. The handset was disconnected, which can happen quite easily. A small table knocked over, also seems minor. The kitchen otherwise was normal. If she were experiencing intense pain, cramping, etc, she could easily have tugged the handset & bumped the...

Yes, the one in question was on 128 southbound, between where the Mass Pike & Rt 9 cross it. There were a few newer ones built along 128 in those years. They still stand, but with different identities! :) I agree, though there are similarities, the 2 women aren't related at all.

Apparently, there was a confession, which led no where, but the police believed that her estranged husband was responsible, and that she was killed. According to what I read, they believe she was buried in the foundations of a Howard Johnsons that was being built.

There still could be. The AFB, as far as I'm concerned, is still in play. Too close to be ruled out yet!:websleuther:

I just re-read the PDF, and the sightings do sound convincing, but create more confusion for me, since they add MILES to her ramble, and she reverses direction as well. I'm starting to believe that was her, but not that she made it there on her own, in that condition. I wonder if there was a...

I mean where her house was, it was one of the first ones to be removed. Several were still there in the early 90s, including interestingly, one a couple of doors down which belonged to a Dr. I was able to go into them before they were taken away. Old Bedford Rd where the house was, is now...

Yes, the road, and the house that she lived in, too. In the 90s, when they were clearing the brush, I was stunned at how close the AFB really was to the street. Divided the two, meaning Hanscomb & Old Bedford Rd.

I've always wondered that, too. So close, and easy to meet someone just taking a walk. Also, easy to get to the house from behind, thru the woods, and not be seen.

I happened to work at Minuteman NHP in the 1990s, and one of my co-workers had been on the Lincoln Police force, and involved in the investigation. He said most of the police were sure who "did it", and there was a man involved, not her husband. He wouldn't/couldn't say more.

It backs up to Hanscomb AFB. There is a small wooded area diving the two.

Yes, to millions of people, but never to her family.
