Good news (if it can ever be seen as such) for Joanna's family. They will now, at least, have some answers.
There must be a feeling that there is a VERY high chance of a murder charge, hence the decision to reject the manslaughter plea.

Regarding the GF and the court appearance on Monday- it was a media scrum and I doubt anyone that close to the person appearing would want to be a target for the press. JMO.
The treatment of the first man to be arrested in this case in some corners of the media and internet was shameful. They'd all but convicted him.
Without knowing ALL the reasons why an arrest was made it's hard to decide if he was just hauled in for a few discrepancies or not.
The fact is...
It's been reported that the missing sock is believed to have been used to wipe the crime scene and not for strangulation.
Also being reported is that the girlfriend of the man in custody was at a party 30 miles from Bristol at the time Jo Yeates disappeared.
Perhaps a case of having to wait for more evidence. If the person was abroad for a while they'd have to wait, watch and then decide when they had enough other pieces in place (or a helpful call) and then go in.
Whatever, they must feel they have enough to bring charges at this time.
