It does seem odd, but we don’t have many details at this point. Maybe he fell asleep and when he woke up she was gone. It says she was last seen at 12:30 am. He could have planned to drive her home that night or the next morning, but if she got impatient maybe she left on foot.
I feel like you are reading a lot into the word “grabbed”. They didn’t say she stole the keys. I often use the same word when describing someone taking something (often with permission). ie: I asked my son to warm up the car. He grabbed the keys off the counter and walked outside.
