Timothy Turner, 29, was a truck driver from Jackson, Tennessee. April 22, 1990, he died of multiple gunshot wounds while visiting a friend in Knoxville, Tennessee. After almost thirty years, his murder remains unsolved.
Turner was walking out of Leverett's, a bar on Martin Luther King Drive, with two friends, William Hammond and Kevin Kendricks at 3 a.m. This area of town is known for gang activity, drugs, drive-by shootings, and robberies. It's very dangerous after dark. Turner's friends told police they saw an African American male, approximately 6'1", firing a small Calibur handgun at the ground and into the air as they walked towards their car in the parking lot. As they got into Hammond's car, they heard the guy bragging about what other weapons he had. As they sped away, the man began firing at the car with a 45-calibur handgun, plus the smaller gun he had. Turner was shot dead. Also struck was Kevin Kendricks, 26, who was also visiting Knoxville, but he survived. Their friend William Hammond, 25, who lived locally, frantically drove to the hospital. While en route, he saw two police cars and pulled over for help.
Hammond said he didn't recognize the shooter and thought the shooting may have been random. Police believe it may have been a case of mistaken identity.
Also shot after Turner, Hammond, and Kendricks were struck, was 32-year old Jerry Wayne Geeter, who lived locally. Police are not sure if there was a connection. Geeter survived.
After daylight, police found 17 shells from two different weapons in the parking lot of the bar.
Around 2 p.m. that afternoon, police chased a suspect through a housing project and up the stairs of one of the units there, but the guy got away by jumping out of a window.
I think this was probably gang activity or someone who wanted to do a random shooting.
