Kotzebue man pleads guilty to 2018 murder and sex abuse of 10-year-old Ashley Johnson-Barr

Peter Vance Wilson, a man accused of kidnapping, sexually abusing and killing 10-year-old Ashley Johnson-Barr in Kotzebue in 2018, pleaded guilty to first degree murder and first degree sexual abuse of a minor Monday.

According to a Monday statement from the State of Alaska Department of Law, Wilson eventually confessed to the murder after the case investigator, Sgt. Scott Bartlett with the Alaska State Troopers, confronted him with the evidence linking him to the crime.

As part of the plea, Wilson admitted to all conduct alleged in the initial charges and also four statutory aggravating factors to be considered in his sentencing: deliberate cruelty towards the victim, targeting a vulnerable victim, most serious conduct within the class of offense and similar prior conduct involving one or more other victims.

Wilson’s sentencing is set for Sept. 21. The State of Alaska and Wilson entered into a plea agreement prior to Wilson’s change of plea. If the court accepts the plea agreement, Wilson will be sentenced to a total sentence of 198 years with 99 years suspended.

Tuesday, Sept. 21st:
*Sentencing Hearing (@ am AKT) – AK – Ashley Johnson-Barr (10) (Sept. 6, 2018, Kotzebue; found Sept. 14, 2018) - *Peter Vance Wilson (41/now 44) arrested (9/15/18), charged (9/24/18) & arraigned (9/25/18) with 1 count of murder-intent to cause death in the 1st degree, 2 counts of Murder-sexual assault/kidnapping of child, 1 count of kidnapping-injury/sexual assault, 4 counts of sexual abuse/penetrate of a minor in the 1st degree & 1 count of tampering with evidence. Wilson faces up to 99 years in prison. Plead not guilty. $3M bond.
Trial was set to begin on 9/15/20 have been continued to 10/13/20 has been continued to 7/12/21 cancelled due to guilty plea.
Also Federal Gov’t charged (9/17/18), indicted (9/20/18) & arraigned (9/21/18) with making false statements to a federal agent. The charge filed against Wilson centers on accusations that he lied to law enforcement, particularly in regards to Johnson-Barr's cell phone, which is said to have led authorities to her body Friday evening. Plead not guilty.

An Alaska judge sentenced the man who killed 10-year-old Kotzebue girl Ashley Johnson-Barr in 2018 to a 99-year sentence Tuesday.

The sentence ensures that Peter Vance Wilson will likely spend the rest of his life in prison and ends the criminal legal case in one of the most notorious recent homicides in Alaska.
