There are a lot of missing people on NamUs aged between 5 and 9 in Alaska who went missing before this skull was found. Most of them are boating accidents. So I'm not sure if they'd end up being the skull that was found "in a yard". Do we have any idea where the yard was?

Bumping up.
Maybe they should consider
NamUs MP66490, initials SO, 8 y.o., missing in 1990, because although he was presumed drowned, "No one actually saw him go into the water."
(Seems unlikely, I know, I know.)
