13/7/2016 BYRON Bay police are preparing a brief for the coroner after a body was discovered about 2pm today in bushland near Tallow Beach. Inspector Greg Jago said police did not believe there were suspicious circumstances to the death but because of the length of time the body had laid undiscovered, no formal identification had been possible. ‘It was a male in his 40s and we believe we know who it is but we need to formally identity him using other means,’ Inspector Jago said. ‘We estimate the person had been
dead for about two weeks.’

3/11/2017 The court heard the last confirmed sighting of Ms Metcalfe was at the Lismore Bus Station on November 3, 2017. The following day her belongings, including a wallet with bank cards and a Medicare card, were found scattered on the railway platform at Mullumbimby. That prompted her parents to report their concerns to police at Byron Bay. Counsel assisting the coroner Kirsten Edwards told the court the mother of two "was in a state of psychosis when she went missing" and "She had been diagnosed as schizophrenic, and had no access to her medication.". Police received a call on 29/11 reporting the sighting of the body between Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads.Due to the condition of the corpse the are currently using dental records to identify the individual. A pathologist found no physical injuries or signs of trauma, but could not rule out foul play due to the advanced level of decomposition. There were no signs of drowning, and no trace of drugs in Ms Metcalfe's blood. The court was told no active steps were taken to locate Ms Metcalfe between November 5, when her parents thought they had reported her missing, and November 8 when a missing persons report was actually taken. Ms Edwards told the court there was also no consultation with homicide, the missing persons unit or the media unit about seeking further assistance to investigate Ms Metcalfe's disappearance.
