The body of missing Melbourne woman Maryam Hamka is believed to have been found in bushland more than two years after she vanished.

Victoria Police Detective Inspector Dave Dunstan will front a press conference on Monday in relation to the discovery of a body in Cape Schanck earlier today.

The discovery comes a year after Toby Loughnane was ordered to stand trial over the killing his former partner in April 2021.

A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed human remains, believed to be Ms Hamka, were located about 10.30am on Monday in bushland off Rogers Road near Patterson Road.

Loughnane pleaded not guilty to his former partner's murder and faces a Supreme Court of Victoria trial.

Police say that human remains found at Cape Schanck on the Mornington Peninsula on Monday are believed to belong to Maryam Hamka.

The 36-year-old was reported missing by her family on 15 April 2021. She was last seen leaving a Brunswick Woolworths at 5.30pm on 10 April.

Police have charged two men over Hamka’s alleged murder.

Her boyfriend Toby Loughnane has been committed to stand trial for murder in the supreme court. Oscar Newman also faces trial charged with assisting Loughnane to avoid apprehension.

Ms Hamka's body was found after Mr Loughnane led police to the bushland site more than two years later.

The prosecution told the court her remains had been covered in lime and her skull showed signs of facial fractures.

During the hearing, Mr Loughnane, dressed in a white shirt and striped tie, listened intently to the proceedings, taking down pages of notes.

Maryam Hamka was last seen at a Brunswick Woolworths store in 2021.

Prosecutor Kristie Churchill told the court after Ms Hamka's death, Mr Loughnane called a friend, Oscar Newman, and asked for help.

Mr Newman allegedly went to Mr Loughnane's house on the afternoon of April 11, 2021, where he was said to have seen blood at the bottom of the stairs, before finding Ms Hamka's naked body in a bathroom.

The court heard Mr Loughnane later borrowed Mr Newman's red Mazda 3 to dispose of Ms Hamka's body, and also sent messages to Ms Hamka's phone in the following days in a bid to pretend she was still alive.

This afternoon, a member of Ms Hamka's family could be heard sobbing as prosecutors outlined the alleged abuse she suffered at the hands of Mr Loughnane.

Defence lawyer Daniel Sala described the details of domestic violence as "most unpleasant", but told the jury when all evidence and facts were considered "dispassionately" it would show Ms Hamka had died of an overdose.

The trial will continue on Wednesday, when the prosecution calls its first witnesses
