VicRoads - Registration and Licensing says .... Flashback to 1978! At the time, young drivers only had a probationary period of 1 year and there were no green Ps.

It sounds as if, in 1977 at 17 years old, he could have been a P-plater or possibly had a full license. Depending how quickly he passed his Learners Test and got his Ps.
Thank you @SouthAussie,
You're worth your weight in GOLD!

Early 80s it’s was 16 and 9 months to get a learners permit in vic, 18 for probationary licence.
If he was driving around Melbourne, at 17, he was on a Learners, the crucial bit to that is, he must have had someone else with him, one was not allowed to drive alone, on an L. Not many 17 yr olds had a car of their own, then, in Melbourne, because, of course , he could not get insurance for it, or register it in his name, at 17.

Not sure he cared for laws Troops :p

The ABC has an article about the foresight of VICPOL to collect, and store, sensibly, the blood evidence, way back then in 1977... DNA was not discovered until 1984, and was not used, or found that it could be used to such devastating effect in crime solving until 1986, ( see Colin Pitchfork ) so someone in VICPOL had a crystal ball, really.

From this article:

“detectives flew to Hobart in February 1977 to interview a then 31-year-old man who was being held in Risdon prison, after a blood-stained knife had been found in a Victorian-registered car.
The vehicle had been shipped to Tasmania just four days after the Easey Street murders.”

The article then describes it as a “red herring.”
So was this a different car with a different knife in it?

Tony Kouroumblis said his brother had been in trouble as a youth, but had not done anything as serious as police were alleging.

Perry left Melbourne in 2017 for Greece. He is a dual Greek-Australian citizen.

Nine Newspapers reported that he left Australia after police asked him for a DNA sample in relation to the case, a process it underwent for several persons of interest. Police also announced a $1m reward in the case in 2017.

Tony said Perry, who was known by the nickname Dingo, was a metalworker. Company records show that he operated a business, AAA Victorian Wrought Iron, from the eastern suburb of Bulleen, and then from Dandenong, since 2003.'

( I'm curious as to how he earned that nickname, among his colleagues and acquaintances , a very Australian provenance . Collins Dictionary gives this meaning...a cowardly or treacherous person..... a cheat, a coward.

Oxford Dictionary gives it thus.... A treacherous, cowardly, unscrupulous, or objectionable person.)

His profile photo shows him sitting on a motorbike. Wonder if he had one back in 1977??

Also noticed someone has called him dingo in the comments ( as well as him giving out his phone number)

I got the impression, Dr S, that everyone is being a bit coy and shy about why Perry suddenly ups sticks and heads for Italy. Keeping in mind, as Sly says, he was asked, back in Melbourne, in 2017, to submit to a DNA< said yes, and skipped out of it and off to Greece , in jig time in his socks, and disappeared under the legal umbrella of Greek law.

Shane Patton said he did not know why Perry went off to Italy , but his little face looked mighty suspicious, to me. His eyes widened, and he had a little tremor of the lips...

So Perry knows, as long as he is in Greece, if he keeps low, he won't be extradited back to Collingwood Magistrates Court.

But then, at 65, for some reason, some inner voice , some call only his ear can hear, he lays out money on a trip to Rome that guarantees him being picked up on a Red Alert, since he would know that VICPOL, once they realised he had scarperd , would move on to a relative of his, because of Mitochondrial DNA , probably young Tony , his younger brother who speaks of him so firmly , could have been Tony that had to do the test, and would have, not believing that Perry would do such a thing, and still doesn't., that told him about the coppers putting him thru it because Perry had gorn, gorn, gorn...

Perry would know all this, he 'd have to keep up with stuff like that , his very existence relies upon him being in the loop on detection in criminal matters, all over the world....

But he buys that ticket! he boards that plane... . .. I am astonished at this. It had to be good stuff, life changing stuff, stuff of his dreams, a windfall , a huge project...... why else would someone walk straight into the lions den? After nearly 50 years of laying low.....?

Maybe he wanted to be caught.

Like Ronald Biggs when he became unwell and wanted the UK health system to look after him.

Perhaps PKs finances weren't going too well and/or his health had declined.
:D:eek: ye gods, I would not have thought the Greek health system was that bad that Port Philip Correction centre would be attractive!!... surely that cannot be so !! Biggs collected 20,000 pounds from the DailyMail, to come on home, that may have been an added attraction. Brazil may have been a bit hard on his elderly bones.

Italian health care system is ranked about the best in the world, so maybe he wants to stay in Italy and is going to fight the extradition..... good luck with that.

It is perplexing why he decided to buy that plane ticket.......
