Nearly 20 years after 17-year-old Alissa Turney disappeared from her home in Phoenix, Arizona in 2001, her stepfather Michael Turney has been indicted by a grand jury in her murder.

Turney was arrested on Thursday in Mesa, Arizona, and charged with second-degree murder, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office announced at a press conference. Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel declined to say what led to the arrest, only that a grand jury issued the indictment.

Clarification notice: A few articles note Alissa's stepfather is Michael Turney; however, Alissa's sister Sarah notes in her podcast Voices for Justice: The Story of Alissa Turney ( 4 min) that he is their father. MOO
More clarity: Alissa and Sarah have the same mom, therefore, they're half-siblings. Their mother remarried when Alissa was 3 and her step-father Michael Turney adopted her (at some point) during the marriage. Sarah's bio-father is Michael Turney. MOO

We are inside the courtroom for today’s trial start…the small gallery is packed. Defendant Turney isn’t here yet but his counsel asked for cameras not to show his face. Judge denied request because his face is already in the media so the court coverage won’t cause add’l harm.

COMING UP: Opening statements are set to begin soon in AZ v. Michael Turney. Turney is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his stepdaughter, Alissa, whose body has never been found. @JuliaCourtTV is in Arizona with the latest from the #MissingSisterMurderTrial.

MICHAEL TURNEY TRIAL: Day 1 Opening statements are set to begin in the Michael Turney trial in just a few minutes. A little recap, Michael is facing a second degree murder charge in the cold case disappearance of his step-daughter Alissa Turney. She went missing in 2001. At the time Michael reported Alissa as a runaway, but after a bizarre turn of events he was arrested in 2020.

Turney’s team tried to block his face from being shown. That was denied by the judge. How today will go… - Opening statement will happen today - Lunch will happen in the 11 an hour - Court will end at 3:45 pm today - Sounds like we may get at least one witness called today

Turney is in the court room looking very different from his IA in 2020. He’s in a wheelchair and using a headset to hear. He’s now 75 years old. As the prosecution team was setting up, we did see home videos would be used at some point in their opening statement.

In 2008 after hundreds of interviews, there was a search of his home and a large amount of pipe bombs were found. Michael served 10 years in prison for those crimes. During that time Alissa’s sister (Sarah) started a podcast/TikTok sharing her dad’s suspicious behavior (including filming Alissa at work and in the pool). Again, Michael was arrested in 2020. An Arizona man faces trial for allegedly killing his teenage stepdaughter more than 20 years ago. Seventy-five-year-old Michael Turney stands accused of murdering 17-year-old Alyssa Turney after taking her out of school early in May 2001. The teen’s body was never found. Nearly 20 years later, Michael Turney was arrested after being indicted on a second-degree murder charge by a grand jury.

TURNEY TRIAL: Opening statements are about to begin in the murder trial of Alissa Turney, a Paradise Valley teen who disappeared in May 2001. Her step-father, Michael Turney, is accused of killing her. Alissa was never found. In the courtroom is Alissa’s sister, Sarah Turney, who began a podcast and TikTok page to help try and solve the case. An arrest of her own father was made 3 year later.

Now Michael Turney’s team is ask for a mistrial due to molest being brought up in court saying this was ruled on previously.

Judge will look at previous rulings and have a decision after lunch. They are now talking about another witness the state wants to use.

They are showing an @ABCNewsLive interview with Michael from I believe 2009. They are taking the jury also through some of the videos that Michael Turney recorded with cameras set up throughout the home.

State is setting expectations for jurors that’s how they are presenting this. They are taking them through May 17, 2001 (the day Alissa went missing). The prosecutor also says there is no crime scene, no DNA or blood evidence, but instead is describing the bizarre behavior that has been alleged before. That behavior includes Michael recording phone calls and posting cameras throughout the family’s home. The day Alissa went missing there’s no recording the prosecutor says.

SUMMARY OF PROSECUTION OPENING STATEMENTS: -stepfather Michael Turney was last to see Alissa Turney alive -Michael spied on Alissa for years with surveillance footage, recorded hundreds of calls, and attempted to control every aspect of her life -Prosecutor showed a “contract” Michael created and made Alissa sign saying things like he never sexually abused her or hurt her -of all recordings he preserved, there’s no video recording of the argument he claims he and Alissa had that day, no video of her leaving the house that day, and no recording of a phone call from CA Michael Turney claimed was Alissa
