Gilbert murder trial jury screening begins this week.

Marissa Devault crushed her husband’s skull with a hammer.

She said that she caught him sexually abusing their daughter and that he turned on her, choking her and raping her.

Prosecutors say she killed Dale Harrell in his sleep in their home in Gilbert in January 2009; they want her sentenced to death.

they have a good judge on this case - good reputation.

I followed this story and have some strong opinions. I am interested to see how this plays out. Thaks for posting LambChop!

Interesting to note that Marissa and the Arias woman may be cellmates right now. At the least, they seem to know each other in the slammer.

JA is in solitary but they may be in the same block but I don't think they would be in the same cell. One or the other would be dead by now.

Wow. This woman lets her husband back in who she claims is abusing her and takes up with a boyfriend who is a pedophile. Gee how ironic that JA had the same problem with her ex. JMO

OMGosh! Wonder if this is where Arias got her story from?

ETA: Maybe the insinuation is that she and Arias may have been cellmates at some point? I don't know why it was even in the article... except for what Fran is picking up. OMG YIKES!!! wow, fran, you may be onto something.

I remember this case stunk from the get-go.

There is a FB message from a former inmate of Estrella describing what good friends Marissa "Reese" Devault and CMJA were...that JA seemed almost obsessed with Reese.

I try to keep in mind that anyone can post on FB. Still, this person seemed to have fairly good detailed information about that relationship.

If you google search the Web for "jodi arias" and Devault, the FB link should pop up. Take a look at the whole thread.

Again, it's FB, so who knows if this source is reliable?

I know. Interesting case to follow. I guess they are picking a jury now. What timing for the Arias trial if all this comes out. Well, I'm sure the locals are aware of her story. Now we know why defense wanted those delays. This case puts domestic violence in the forefront. Although it sounds as if she may have suffered from abuse she leaves a lot to be desired as a Mom from what I've read so far. jmo

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information in the media. I plan on waiting for the trial before forming any opinions...the way I did with the Arias trial. I watched it after the fact on YouTube. Do we know whether this will be an option in the DeVault trial?

ETA: Might these trials overlap?!

From the article LambChop linked:

"Devault’s psychological experts claim she has battered woman syndrome and post-traumatic stress disorder. The prosecution tried to block that defense and will use the same expert they used to counter Arias’ claims of PTSD. Devault’s defense attorneys will use an expert who was supposed to testify for Arias."

Is the former a reference to DeMarte and the latter a reference to Karp?

I would think it would be Karp. DeMarte testified for the State. Karp is the only one who examined JA and did not testify. jmo

gee, she's been incredibly unlucky - married a wife abuser and child molester and was having a secret affair with a child pornographer

then she was SO afraid of the husband that she had to murder him while he was asleep and while she had a 'friend' over, then persuade her 'friend' to take the blame because it would make absolutely no sense to take the opportunity to leave with the kids and friend while hubby was sleeping ... no, let's not do that - let's kill him instead, yeah, that's the ticket

[the above contains sarcasm, of the dripping variety]

This statement really got to me. Along with her boyfriend who was a pedophile. This is certainly a trial we may want to follow.

"Devault moved with her daughter to her parent's Lake Havasu home. She threatened divorce, but returned a month later after he reluctantly agreed to attend counseling on the condition she carried her pregnancy to full-term.

'I wasn't going to have (my daughter) because if I was gonna, you know, be alone again, I did not need another kid,' she told the detective. "

Anyone remember why Dr. Karp dropped out of the JA case? Wasn't it DeMarte that said JA had reported to Karp many more instances of abuse by TA than to the others who examined her? Could it be that the abusive episodes that JA was describing were remarkably similar to the ones that MD was telling Dr. Karp? Provided it was Dr. Karp who also examined MD. Wow. If that is the case no wonder defense would not call Dr. Karp. lol

IIRC, wasn't it was due to health reasons that Dr. Karp dropped out? Not 100% sure of that, but that's what sticks in my mind for some reason.

I'm pretty sure you do remember right about JA reporting many more instances of 'abuse' by TA to Dr. Karp than she did to the others who examined her.

This is all over Twitter right now! Theories that Jodi developed her DV claims based on discussions with Marissa Devault. I am going to start reading up on it today! Glad to see this thread! #cheers

You have to wonder if MD's husband moved back to protect his daughters from MD's boyfriend?

Will this trial be livestreamed? Sure sounds interesting.

The poor girl she just 'grabbed the hammer off the side of the bed' and hit him with it.
Doesn't everyone have a hammer on the side of their bed for decoration?

This has to be premeditated. She had the weapon all ready to go. JMO
