How sad for his family.

I wonder if his rental car ever turned up anywhere, but it sounds like it didn't.

The long planned drive through a rural landscape + car missing + family/career/assets left behind point toward a car accident, not a voluntary disappearance, IMO.

The rental car to our knowledge has never been found. However the case, has been dormant for a very long time. Also, the case files were lost due to various reasons. A new missing persons case has been opened. So if the car has been found it may not have been identified as being a car associated with a missing person.

I know this sounds like a dumb question, it being AZ. Are there any bodies of water near where he went missing?

When I was researching, I looked around the key locations mentioned in the newspaper articles (Phoenix, Globe and Pinetop). The biggest body of water I found was Rainbow Lake, which is not too far outside of Pinetop-Lakeside.
