Phoenix man accused of killing 4, including wife and 2 kids
A Phoenix man has been arrested on suspicion of killing his wife, two of his young daughters and a man who the suspect thought was romantically involved with his wife, police said Friday.

Austin Smith was booked on suspicion of four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault, Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

Smith was arrested Thursday evening as he drove from an apartment complex where officers had responded to a shooting. There, they found the body of 46-year-old Ron Freeman. A woman and another man were shot and wounded at the complex, Thompson said.

Officers who went to Smith's home later Thursday found his wife, 29-year-old Dasia Patterson, and their 5-year-old daughter, Nasha Smith, dead from gunshot wounds. Their 7-year-old daughter, Mayan Smith, died from apparent blunt-force trauma, and the couple's 3-year-old daughter was found uninjured under a bed at the family's home.

"It is my understanding that for whatever reason he elected not to shoot her," Thompson said.

The suspect told detectives during an interview that he believed "in God's eyes it was all right for him to deal with someone in this manner who had been involved in adultery or an extramarital affair," Thompson said.

Smith later told police he confronted his wife after she arrived home from a local bar. According to the police report, she denied the affair, but Smith shot her anyway "because he believed God told him to do so."

The police report states that Smith shot his 5-year-old daughter because she had "exhibited bad behavior he deemed against God's laws."

Police say Smith's 7-year-old daughter was crying over what happened, and Smith "believed you should not weep for the wicked, so he punched her in the face several times with a closed fist" and then eventually hit her in the head multiple times with a baseball bat.

Police also found the couple's 3-year-old daughter hiding under the bed. She was not harmed.

According to the police report, Smith did not kill his youngest daughter "because she reminded him of himself." He said his "other two daughters reminded him of his wife whom he considered wicked in the eyes of God."

Police say Smith then went to where his brother was staying, an apartment near 67th Avenue and Osborn Road. He first encountered Ron Freeman, a family friend who said he was crazy to think his wife would cheat on him.

Smith shot Freeman repeatedly, even after he had fallen to the ground. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

In a probable cause statement, police say Smith admitted to then going to his car, grabbing a rifle and starting to shoot at friends of his family trying to help Freeman because God told him to shoot them.

Smith eventually left the scene, but was stopped by police a short distance away and taken into custody without incident.

Why parents kill their kids: Psychiatrist reviews Austin Smith investigation

[...]

Sadly, hundreds of kids in the United States are killed by their parents, and many of the victims are very young.

We talked to a psychiatrist about Smith's case and his reasons behind alleged crimes.

“Men have a real difficult time with humiliation,” said Valley psychiatrist Dr. Martin Newman.

Newman said this appears to be the start of a psychotic rage.

“If also he feels he’s been betrayed by his wife; that exacerbates that condition,” Newman said.

[...]

“If he believes, truly believes, that God has given him a message to do this, he’s acting in a 'selfless way,'” Newman said. “This makes no sense to individuals like you and I [sic], but to him, it’s the right thing to do.”

The number of children killed by their parents over the past few decades is shockingly high, statistics show.

[...]

Newman said it’s important to address mental health in people before they get to this point.

he's smiling???!!!

Disgusting.

Not much of a man. imo And he knew it.

God told him . . . building his "crazy" defense. imo, again.

Hope he doesn't get away with this, he is a murderer. Poor children, it's heartbreaking. Hope the surviving child can work her way through this some day. No sisters, no mama, and that beast can't be called a father. I hope there is a large extended family who will care for the little innocent.
