Kentucky man reported missing at Grand Canyon
March 1 2021
''A 40-year-old man has gone missing at the Grand Canyon, sparking a search by the National Park Service.

John Pennington, of Walton, Kentucky, was last known to be at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, near Yaki Point, the National Park Service said.

Pennington abandoned his vehicle at Yaki Point on or around Feb. 23 and is believed to be traveling alone, possibly on a yellow motorcycle, the park service said.

Grand Canyon spokesperson Joelle Baird said Monday, "Yesterday and continuing today our aviation crew will continue aerial search reconnaissance flights."

Rangers ask anyone who may have seen Pennington or the yellow motorcycle to call the park service's Investigative Services Branch Tip Line at 888-653-0009.''

How do you abandon a car and leave on a motorcycle? I am going to go ahead and guess a motorcycle was stolen around the same time he went missing. The flier says it has Ohio plates. This is going to be a weird one.
Lots of campers tow a motorbike. He could have just been out for a tour, got detained, and now his vehicle (van? Rv? Bus?) seems abandoned- when that was never his intent. Not necessarily weird- too soon to tell. Imo

Agreed. Thanks. I saw “car” in the headline and didn’t notice that the article says “vehicle.”

Agreed. Thanks. I jump the gun a lot. But... you can’t typically tow a camper with a car. ETA, never mind, the title says car, but the article says vehicle. I wonder about the Ohio plates on the motorcycle, though.
Yep- def would like to know what kind of vehicle... Also unclear about the plates on vehicle. Could also be Ohio. Perhaps just moved, or borrowing from friend/brother/dad. So little info to go on! I hope just lost. So many cliff edges- few guard rails there.

''Pennington abandoned his vehicle at Yaki Point, a scenic overlook in the park, around Feb. 23, officials say.

Pennington may be riding a yellow 2005 Suzuki motorcycle with an Ohio license plate. He’s “believed to be traveling alone,” according to park officials.''

''Last year, Canadian officials said a man by the same name, age and hometown was caught twice entering the country in violation of COVID-19 border restrictions, McClatchy News reported. He faced a fine up to $750,000.

Pennington appeared in virtual court on Feb. 8 for a hearing in which prosecutors stayed the charges against him, Cochrane Today reported. In a previous court appearance, he denied breaking rules and said he was traveling from Alaska to the U.S., the news outlet reported.''

Search underway at Grand Canyon for missing Kentucky man
"We were able to do some aerial searching yesterday and today but there are no clues that were found below the rim," Park Service spokesperson Joelle Baird told NBC News on Monday.

The search for Pennington was announced Sunday, several days after his car was found abandoned near Yaki Point "on or around February 23."

Yaki Point has a scenic pull-off leading to the South Kaibab Trail, a popular route into the heart of the canyon.''

"That's an area thats normally closed to the public and only shuttle buses are allowed permission to park," Baird said.

The missing person notice contains details about a yellow motorcycle with Ohio plates, Baird said, because it is believed he was towing the vehicle behind the car that was found abandoned.''

OK, this is really sounding pretty strange.

I am not sure the license plate number is correct and might be a reporting error. The 2005 Suzuki is a GSX-R600 also called Gixxer. I have seen reports and the flyer stating the make and model of the bike but no number for the Ohio plate. I was wondering if some reports mistook the model for the plate number?
I guess it could be a personal plate.

I would also suggest posting his flyer on motorcycle forums and mc racing forums. I am going to forward it to my ex so he can post it. These guys ride and meet other riders. My opinion is this could be an accident.
Riders will tow their bikes to national parks and mountains, park and leave trailer and car and then ride for the day.
