Details of Disappearance
Paul got into an argument with his father at their home left his home in the 3800 block of East Carol Circle in Mesa, Arizona on the evening of August 11, 2001. That night or early the next morning, he left home driving his father's silver Chevrolet pickup truck. On August 12, he visited his grandmother in Globe, Arizona. He was last seen after he left her home.

On August 14, Paul's father's truck was pulled over for a minor traffic violation in Tucson, Arizona. Before the responding officer could confirm the driver's identity, the truck drove away and a high-speed chase ensued. Police were unable to catch the driver and the chase was called off due to inclement weather.

The next morning, the vehicle was found wrecked and abandoned on the side of a steep hill in a remote area in the Sierra Catalina Mountains. Paul's wallet, driver's license and cellular phone were under the seat and the keys were on the console. He had cashed his last paycheck from work the day before he went missing, but the cash wasn't found in his wallet.

Paul was raised by a single mother in Missouri, before moving in with his father in the summer of 2000. He attended Globe High School in 2001. He enjoyed playing multiple sports, including football and basketball, and hoped to be able to attend college on an athletic scholarship. His sister does not believe he would have run away without contacting their mother at some point. His case remains unsolved. His case remains unsolved.

After filing a FOiA report with Pima County, as well as Oro Valley, it was discovered the vehicle never came to a stop. It was also discovered the pursuit was not ended due to inclement weather, but rather due to AZDPS patrol vehicle being stop sticked. We attempted to FOiA AZDPS for the pursuit report, but sadly the Trooper involved in the pursuit found it not necessary to actually write the report. Officer Curley only submitted a "cancellation report" instead.

I also forgot to add, the vehicle pursuit happened on the 12th. Paul was not reported missing until the 14th. The vehicle was located and towed from Redington Pass on the 15th.

Our goal is one thing, and one thing only Bring Paul Home!! Thank you so much!
Anyone have questions, please do not hesitate to ask. We have SEVERAL binders on Paul's case. We are looking for questions. Any question may just be one thing we have not thought of yet. :)

I am assuming his DNA is in NamUs? I am having trouble accessing the exclusions list, has this john doe been excluded?

Sorry it has taken so long for me to respond. We have been doing a lot of deep diving into Paul's case.

Yes, DNA of Paul's Mom and Dad are both entered into NamUs as well as CODIS.

Hi @karie911 I would like to ask; is it believed that it was indeed Paul driving at the time of the accident? I assume there was only 1 person in the vehicle at the time?
I wondered if you were able to reveal some of the details about the bad crowd he had gotten involved with and how this might link to his disappearance?
And also if you could reveal if his argument with his father has any bearing on his disappearance, eg; was it about his recent associations?

If Paul had an accident and made it back to the road to seek help where would this have placed him? Can you reveal the location of the accident? And what kind of inclement weather was it on that evening?

Thank you and I hope you get the answers you seek

We do not believe Paul was driving the truck. We have been able to discover he was far to new of a driver, only being licensed about 6ish months. The truck was able to evade law enforcement entirely to easily. Sadly, no one knows how many people were in the truck at the time of the pursuit. We have an 'Agency assist" report for the police department that aided AZDPS, but the trooper that actually INITIATED the pursuit, never deemed it necessary to actually file a report on the incident. He only requested a "cancellation report." The officer's from the assisting agency was never able to get a look at the driver, or how many occupants were in the vehicle.

We only have some minor "hearsay" that he "hung out with the wrong crowd." From the people we have spoke to, that were friends with Paul prior to his disappearance, not one person confirmed this "bad crowd" scenario.
As for the argument with his dad, we have suspected reasons WHY the argument happened. We just haven't been able to confirm it, as of yet. (We suspect it was whom Paul's "girlfriend" was at the time. But we can not go into much detail about that.)

The vehicle was located about 300 yards off of Redington Pass near Mile Post 16.2. It was reported the truck was "on its side, on a steep hill, with no known roads to the location of the truck." They also stated the "windows and mirrors were broken, and damage to the undercarriage"

The reporting party stated they could see "keys and a wallet" in the truck. Upon recovery of the vehicle, they later found Paul's Wallet, keys, hat, cell phone was recovered, as well as cigarettes' and a lighter.

The cigarettes and lighter is another reason we do not believe Paul to be the driver of the truck. He did NOT smoke, nor did he like the smell of cigarettes. His mom was reportedly a "heavy smoker" and never liked how they smelled. He would not have allowed someone to smoke in his vehicle either.

The night of the pursuit (August 12, 2001) there was NO inclement weather. There has been talk that the weather was the reason for the ending of the pursuit. That is not true. The pursuit ended when the AZDPS Trooper Curly drove over stop sticks that was intended for the fleeing truck. The weather did not happen until late in the night of the 13th. This is when the truck was first located. However, they had to wait to recover the truck until the morning of the 15th. They had a pretty bad storm near Gila County, and the Catalina Mountain range. High winds, thunderstorms, hail and flash flooding.

At 9am August 15, 2001.. Search and Rescue& Pima County, with the assistance of Air Support, performed a ground and air search of the area. No signs of Paul could be located. We have copies of this detailed report as well.

Thank you for showing interest in Paul's case. Please continue to ask all the questions!!!
