BP Oil Spill Approaching Gulf Coast

Had to walk from one side of my house to the other just as the news was reporting what I thought I heard say was that the oil has reached Ft. Myers/Lee County. I didn't get the station and now I'm having a hard time finding a report on it, so maybe I did hear wrong, but as upset as it made me, Ft. Myers is more likely. So here I am at the Experts Palace...hoping to receive an awswer soon since I did spend the day at the beach one hour up the road today. No cold, flu any pain, but my voice is has practically dissappear for no reason that I am aware of....coinkydink, I'm sure.

Now I am glad that I had to turn here for assistance and have time to read up...condensation had not occured to me yet :( and it IS that time of year for non-stop rain and the Gulf to spead wherever Mother Nature wants to go. The families that depend on the hard work of commercial fisherman, many just now getting stablized after the year was 2004...our ecosystem....my mind just doesn't want to go there now...but back to my origanal question, if anyone else caught this or can correct me, you are appreciated in advance :) Never has being a Native been this alarming...

RiverRat,
Hey, another river rat here too! This is the official word. Of course as we know, official word everywhere these days is to deny everything until it absolutely can no longer be denied.

Ohhh, I KNOW that Deny is the word and that it has so worked so far...that can only float like the oil for soo long. Thanks for the Link, Fellow rr!

Good morning everyone, just wanted to let you know in case you were unaware...BP is using subcontracting companies / temp services to hire their clean-up workers @ $12.00 an hour with no benefits= fine print, if you get sick from the oil, your s.o.o.l.!!! The ads for the positions require you to have your own steel tip boots???? Why on earth would you need steel-tip boots to clean up oil, other then to kick some BP execs in the head!!!!! And why are clean up workers forced to sign contracts that they will not speak with the media, this entire coverup is very bizarre and disturbing!

I have been looking for ways to help, but I absolutely refuse to work under BP's name for any reason...I'll end up in jail for flagging down Anderson Cooper! I have seen that Sarasota's base for Save Our Seabirds will have training sessions for volunteers, I am considering driving down to attend...find a cheap place to stay for a few months and do my part. ( I have been laid off for a while now, so I don't know how this would interfere with my unemployment status being out of state?) This raises another ? for me, why is no one allowed to film the oil covered wildlife? I understand that they don't want film crews in disrupting the already suffering animals, but these guys have long-focus lenses...they would'nt have to be near the birds and yet this is absolutely not allowed???? Why is there so much cover-up happening surrounding every event with this oil spill? :banghead:

Hi RiverRat, I lived in Lee County 21 years and spent lots of time on those beautiful beaches, especially Sanibel & Captiva. The thought of black oil coming onshore is sickening, I keep thinking of the gentle
Manatees and how this would probably kill them.
It seems (to me) not enough people are taking this seriously and it's upsetting me to think that people who are not living directly on the Gulf act like this is no big deal. Well, it IS a big deal and it will eventually affect everyone in the US! I hope and pray that a miracle happens and the oil will stop before it's too late.

According to Cnn Obama will report live Tuesday at 8:00p.m est. and give us the latest on what is going on. Read the latest.

President Obama said Monday that federal officials are "gathering up facts" to help ensure that embattled oil giant BP fairly compensates people and businesses suffering losses.

Gathering up facts? Really? What the heck has he been doing? How many more facts does he need. We need ACTION!

Seriously....how many days has this oil been spilling? 50 something and Obama is still gathering facts? Good Lordy we're in trouble!

Late Wednesday night, the FAA created a "no-fly zone" over a large area in the Gulf in order to, uhm, secure the safety of cleanup workers or something.:banghead:
All aircraft operations are prohibited except those flights authorized by ATC, routine flights supporting offshore oil operations; federal, state, local and military flight operations supporting oil spill recovery and reconstitution efforts; and air medical and law enforcement operations.

What don't they want us to see?
Here's an interesting map provided by BP!!

In an e-mail, BP engineer Brian Morel told a fellow employee that the company is likely to make last-minute changes in the well.

"We could be running it in 2-3 days, so need a relative quick response. Sorry for the late notice, this has been nightmare well which has everyone all over the place," Morel wrote.

The e-mail chain culminated with the following message by another worker: "This has been a crazy well for sure."

BP also apparently rejected advice of a subcontractor, Halliburton Inc., in preparing for a cementing job to close up the well. BP rejected Halliburton's recommendation to use 21 "centralizers" to make sure the casing ran down the center of the well bore. Instead, BP used six centralizers.
In an e-mail on April 16, a BP official involved in the decision explained: "It will take 10 hours to install them. I do not like this."
Later that day, another official recognized the risks of proceeding with insufficient centralizers but commented: "Who cares, it's done, end of story, will probably be fine."
The lawmakers also said BP also decided against a nine- to 12-hour procedure known as a "cement bond log" that would have tested the integrity of the cement. A team from Schlumberger, an oil services firm, was on board the rig, but BP sent the team home on a regularly scheduled helicopter flight the morning of April 20.
Less than 12 hours later, the rig exploded. :furious:

And there you have it!! I hope the upcoming Congressional hearings will be televised, I will be watching.

I only wish I were kidding!! God help us!!
There is a very informative post from "dougr" here-

Eventually even that will be futile as the well casings cannot support the weight of the massive system above with out the cement bond to the earth and that bond is being eroded away. When enough is eroded away the casings will buckle and the BOP will collapse the well. If and when you begin to see oil and gas coming up around the well area from under the BOP? or the area around the well head connection and casing sinking more and more rapidly? ...it won't be too long after that the entire system fails. BP must be aware of this, they are mapping the sea floor sonically and that is not a mere exercise. Our Gov't must be well aware too, they just are not telling us.
There are lots of links to this post-including this one which shows in detail, what an off shore well looks like!

Even worse, as my latest week of adventures illustrate, BP is using federal agencies to shield itself from public accountability.

For example, while flying on a small plane from New Orleans to Orange Beach, the pilot suddenly exclaimed, "Look at that!" The thin red line marking the federal flight restrictions of 3,000 feet over the oiled Gulf region had just jumped to include the coastal barrier islands off Alabama.
"There's only one reason for that," the pilot said. "BP doesn't want the media taking pictures of oil on the beaches. You should see the oil that's about six miles off the coast," he said grimly. We looked down at the wavy orange boom surrounding the islands below us. The pilot shook his head. "There's no way those booms are going to stop what's offshore from hitting those beaches."

BP knows this as well -- boom can only deflect oil under the calmest of sea conditions, not barricade it -- so they have stepped up their already aggressive effort to control what the public sees.

The Presi is coming to Pensacola tomorrow. Actually, he's prolly already here. I'm sure all he'll do is take a look at our beaches, pick up a tar ball (oh wait....BP will clean the sand before he arrives), have a nice little photo op and then return to Washington - accomplishing nothing really.

Essies, I just read your link...thank you so much for sharing this with us! What a heart wrenching eye opener!!! At the end, he mentions the collapse of the Gulf floor...what does this mean, what would happen, this is just incomprehensible!!!!
