I still cannot seem to get past the fact that the Dutch and 18 other countries reached out to us and offered a helping hand (countries with experience) and we flat out denied them!!!!!!! This is not a time for 'American Pride'!!!!

I thought it was strange too, but then I learned there is such a thing called the "Jones Law" that prohibits foreign countries from helping.

"Mr. Obama could issue a full waiver of the Jones Act, but failed even to mention the law in his speech last night. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Bush administration didn't hesitate to waive the law completely in an emergency. Congressman Djou says a waiver is essential in spurring the Gulf Coast cleanup." <snipped>

I'm in Fort Lauderdale. I live approximately one mile (the way the crow flies) from the beach - I'm actually directly west of Port Everglades.

Anyway, our local news starts at 4 here.

I just heard a teaser with video showing a baggie with tar balls in it and they said "JUST WAIT TIL YOU SEE WHAT WE FOUND ON FT. LAUDERDALE BEACH TODAY!!!"

Oh my oh my oh my !

The story won't be on until the 6 broadcast - but I certainly will let everyone know what I hear. And I'm willing to bet they send these off and will say they AREN'T from the Deepwater. Just like in the Keys. Yea right.

I can understand them not accepting help from other countries, you're going to have multiple opinions on what should or should not be done, and if they went with one and it was wrong then who is liable? Then there would be the matter of payment, who's going to pay for what, especially if something goes wrong. I think for now we have to unfortunately leave this in the hands of BP.

Only time will tell. I use to live down there and we would have oil days. It was the worst, it would get in between your toes and stain your skin and ruin your bathing suit. I'm fully expecting the oil to work its way down there though, and then around to the Atlantic.

I am on the Atlantic - just north of Miami.

I've lived here my entire life and let's just say that's at least 50 years. I remember as a kid going to the beach and getting "tar" on your feet, on your bathing suits, etc.

Then around the 80's, 90's and early 00's there has been hardly any tar noticeable anywhere. So, this little news blub disturbed me. It would mean it has come around the Keys and up now into the Atlantic.

I'm mostly worried about the Everglades as it is a very fragile ecosystem as it is.

Goldman Sachs Reveals it Shorted Gulf of Mexico

<snipped>
The new revelations came to light after government investigators turned up new emails from Goldman employee Fabrice "Fabulous Fab" Tourre in which he bragged to a girlfriend that the firm was taking a "big short" position on the Gulf.

"One oil rig goes down and we're going to be rolling in dough," Mr. Tourre wrote in one email. "Suck it, fishies and birdies!":furious:

By the way-Tony Hayward sold 1/3 of his stock in BP just before the explosion too!! I don't think they knew or caused the explosion-but I think the risks being taken were common insider knowledge!! :snooty:

BREAKING: BP CEO sold shares of his company's stock weeks before Gulf disaster

The news site Telegraph.co.uk reports that BP CEO Tony Hayward sold £1.4 million of shares in the company he runs mere weeks before the well on the Deepwater Horizon rig burst, pouring millions of oil into the Gulf and causing BP's stock to plummet.

Cuba prepares for BP oil spill
HAVANA, Cuba (Reuters) -- Cuba is making preparations to protect its coast as the BP oil spill continues spreading through the Gulf of Mexico, Cuban officials said on Tuesday.

They offered few specifics about the preparations, but said Venezuela, Cuba's oil-rich ally, has sent a team of spill-fighting experts to help the communist-run island. <snipped>

Update on the "tar balls"

They said a jogger found them this AM on Hollywood Beach - which is in between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. The Coast Guard was called and came and picked them up. CG said they will send them out for testing.

That was it. Funny, the Coast Guard guy said "A tar ball was found" but they showed the baggie and there was like 4 - 5 of them in there.

I just heard they found a tar ball in Pensacola which weight was about a ton.

BP chairman says company cares about 'small people'
AFP

Wed Jun 16, 3:04 pm ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) – BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg said Wednesday the British energy giant cared about the fate of the "small people" hit by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, vowing to look after all affected.

Emerging from White House talks with President Barack Obama, Svanberg said the British energy giant had "always met our obligations and responsibilities."

"We have made clear from the first moment of this tragedy that we will live up to all our legitimate responsibilities," Svanberg said, adding all claims for compensation would be met "swiftly and fairly."

"We will look after the people affected, and we will repair the damage to this region, the environmental damage to this region and to the economy," he added.

Obama said he had urged the BP bosses to remember when they were meeting in the boardroom to "keep in mind those individuals, that they are desperate, may lose business that have been in their families for two or three generations."

Svanberg agreed, saying: "We care about the small people."

.................................................................................

Ok that did it for me and Obama. He allowed this guy to get away with saying this.

He should have grabbed that guy by the tie and explained to him here in the USA we don't have small people. Maybe you and the Queen do but here we are equal. Then he should have given him the bums rush out the door.

What in the world is wrong with our President?

Why are these people even setting foot in our country?

Why aren't they doing prison time for the people they murdered on that drilling rig?

Why aren't they doing prison time for the rare birds and animals they have killed?

Here is a great little Map that is keeping track of the oil. You can put your town and state in the box on the top and see how big the spill is with your town centered at the well.

Here is his We Care About the Small People remark.

Starts about the 4 minute mark.

Dr.Fessel, These BP execs definitely need a long course at charm school, I think the only word that can accurately describe their remarks is 'ignorant'. They are so elite with all of their riches I really think they are out of touch with the real people.
