RIO DE JANEIRO — The killing of the Greek ambassador was shocking even by the standards of this crime-weary city: Investigators say his wife had him murdered in a home they owned in Rio by her lover, a police officer, who then set the diplomat’s remains on fire.

[...]

Ms. Oliveira tried to mislead investigators by saying her husband, 59, had disappeared, Mr. Magalhães said, insisting that she was innocent before confessing on Friday that her lover had killed him.

[...]

The police got a break in the killing of Mr. Amiridis when a man identified as a cousin of Mr. Moreira told investigators that Ms. Oliveira had offered him about $25,000 to assist in the murder. The cousin, Eduardo Moreira de Melo, 24, was also arrested on Friday

Police said that Mr. Moreira told them that he strangled Mr. Amiridis to death during a fight but police said they suspect he was stabbed given the amount of blood on the ambassador’s sofa, adding that the officer may have lied about the fight to paint the crime as an act of self-defense.

"All our evidence suggests that her motivation was to use the financial resources left by the ambassador so she could enjoy life with Sergio," the police officer, Magalhaes said.

The first signs the ambassador had been murdered emerged late Thursday, when police found blood spots believed to be his on a sofa inside the house the couple kept in Nova Iguacu, where the wife's family lives.

Amiridis's charred body was found on Thursday in Rio in his burned-out rental car, a day after his Brazilian wife, Francoise de Souza Oliveira, declared him missing.

What's the situation about diplomatic immunity and thus freedom from arrest for the wife? Does she have it? Or did the Greek government have to approve the arrest?

I don't know the answer for certain, but I doubt his wife has diplomatic immunity. She is not a diplomat herself but she is a Brazilian citizen, which will factor into the case. Since Amiridis is Greek, would/could Greek officials seek to get his wife and her co-conspirators extradited to stand trial in Greece? Seems like it could be a very sticky situation. It's clear Greek officials will do their best to ensure justice is served.

A Greek police team was headed for Brazil to take part in the investigation, while Greece's ambassador in Argentina was travelling to Brasilia, Athens said.

Security footage ‘shows suspected murderers of Greek ambassador to Brazil entering his home before driving off with his body in their car’

As usual, lots of pictures from DM and also CCTV footage of the 2 male suspects entering the Ambassador's home.

However, they erroneously report that the other man arrested is a cousin of Amiridis when he is in fact a cousin of Sergio Moreira.
