Beloved Catholic priest found slain in California church rectory

Link: http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/01/us/california-priest-killed/index.html?hpt=ju_c1

I didn't see this posted yet, but it's been all over the news this morning.

From the link:
"A beloved Roman Catholic priest was found dead Wednesday in his church's rectory, spurring police to launch a murder investigation and those he touched to try to make sense of his sudden passing."

How terrible! Prayers for his family and loved ones!

:praying:

Most of the comments following the article are atrocious. So much hatred of the Church...what's the matter with people?!

Very sad. I will pray for this priest's soul.

:please: that they find the perp !

:please: :please: for this Priest, his Family, his Friends and his Congregation !

People can be so cruel. Regardless of one's religious beliefs, this is still a very beloved man who was murdered. So very sad. :(

I found another article from The Humboldt Beacon that says on Wednesday afternoon, another church about two miles away was broken into. An employee there saw a man inside, but he fled when police arrived.

They aren't sure if the incidents are related, but it sure sounds suspicious.

Suspect is in custody.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/02/us/california-priest-killed/

He was released from a local jail early New Year's Day and showed up at the church a short time later, acting suspicious. Police sent him on his way. Some time after that he was seen by a security guard at the church and told to leave. At 9 AM police were called again. The priest had been killed after "a violent struggle". He died of blunt force injuries, according to the police chief.

Three times (!) he was detained or seen by law enforcement, and three times let go. Unbelievable.

EUREKA, California — Police identified a suspect Thursday in the killing of a respected priest who was found dead in a church rectory in Northern California on New Year's Day.

Eureka police have issued an arrest warrant for Gary Lee Bullock, 43, of Redway in the bludgeoning death of Rev. Eric Freed, according to a statement.

Officials are still investigating a motive in the killing, but Bullock had been in and out of police custody in the hours leading up to Freed's death.

Taken to jail in Eureka, 66 miles away from his home in Redway, released in the middle of the night with no way home, wedding anniversary plans looming and possibly in the midst of a psychotic break caused in part by a lifetime of drug abuse.

Sounds like he targeted the priest for his car. The really crazy part is it's obvious he would be the prime suspect.

A beloved priest who was killed in the Northern California city of Eureka was beaten to death with a wooden stake and a metal gutter pipe, his autopsy shows.

Humboldt County Coroner Dave Parris said Monday that investigators don't want to release more details of how the Rev. Eric Freed was beaten, pending further investigation.

But at his arraignment, Gary Lee Bullock, 44, of Humboldt County, was charged with murder with a special allegation of torture.

:banghead::banghead::banghead: This is horrible !

Police say man charged in priest's murder tried to blow up home

Suspect Gary Lee Bullock rolled up the body of the Rev. Eric Freed in blankets and doused them with liquor before he tried to set them on fire, according to the police affidavit obtained by The Associated Press.

It said Bullock then tried to blow up the rectory of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Eureka by turning on the gas stove and leaving behind a lit cigar that went out before a blaze began.

"It could have been a lot worse," said Eureka police Chief Andrew Mills.

He looked pretty angry in court. A very defiant expression.

We haven't heard anything from the family. I wonder if they have any idea what set him off to do something so dreadful.

So far I haven't read about a motive...

But I might have missed it?

RIP, Father...

:rose: :rose:

:praying: for those that love him...
