Age 55 a resident of Los Angeles California.

Wealthy businessman who "vanished"; {Contemporary newspaper reports claim he had resisted attempts by "Liquor barons" engaged in illegal activities}. His wife received a letter postmarked San Diego supposedly from the missing man postmarked Nov 25, 1929, telling her not to worry, that he would write or call her and that business was bad. His car, a purple Cadillac 4M-46-31, with his rifled wallet was found in a San Diego garage 2 days after his disappearance-placed there by a man who wore a leather vest, khaki trousers and leather puttees, who did not fit his description; also found in the car were cigarettes; a cigar band; strands of reddish hair; a handful of hairpins and other articles which did not belong to the missing man. The only clue to his disappearance was that his car had traces of red clay similar to that found in Borego Valley

California Digitial Newspaper Archive. Crime boss Tony Buccola (who also vanished in May 1930) is alleged to have remarked that he knew what happened to Baumgarteker. There is a question if Baumgarteker's "disappearance" was caused by crime boss Joseph Ardizzonce or by disgruntled employees. Reportedly in 1941 a search was made for a hidden grave of Baumgarteker which was alleged to have been seen years before; however the site was that of a Native American. In the late 1960s a former employee of Baumgartker claimed to police to have known of the location of Baumgarteker's remains

Newspaper reports gave the following description of the missing man:

A day or so before his "disappearence" he had two checks cashed for a total of $1,500- on the day of his disappearence he had left his home for a trip to Tijuana Mexico and was last seen in Los Angeles; he was engaged in legally transfering a large amount of wine from Cucomanaga to Los Angeles for medical wine tonic

Bosch is interesting. Born 1868 in Switzerland, came to the USA sometime prior to 1897, naturalised in 1897 in Sonoma, married in 1898. A clipping at San Bernardino Sun 20 November 1924 — California Digital Newspaper Collection (ucr.edu) confirms that at that date he was living in Honolulu in agreement with the family stories. Various records on Ancestry show him as J J Arnold Bosch and his great granddaughter, Susan Briggs (who is quoted in the link at #4) has a family tree on Ancestry with various cuttings and sources attached. Susan Briggs tree includes the 1927 coverage of the bootlegging arrests so it is clear that the family either believe or know he was the Arnold Bosch involved. This connection makes an immediate link from Baumgartker to mobsters through Bosch (although it says nothing about whether Baumgartker was a willing participant).

Other persons connected to Baumgarker also vanished without trace:
Tony Buccola In May 1930 last seen by his brother in Los Angles the only trace of him was his wrecked car in Venice CA
Joe Porrazzo Wilmington Press Journal 3 June 1930 — California Digital Newspaper Collection
Joe Adrizzoni, Giuseppe Ernesto “Joseph "Iron Man"”...
Joseph E. Neuman a partner of Baumgarker -he dared his wife to race him home in theirseperate cars-when she arrived at their home she found the car with keys in the driveway--and he "Vanished" Joseph W Neuman (unknown-1930) - Find a Grave...
