Age 55 a resident of Los Angeles California.
Wealthy businessman who "vanished"; {Contemporary newspaper reports claim he had resisted attempts by "Liquor barons" engaged in illegal activities}. His wife received a letter postmarked San Diego supposedly from the missing man postmarked Nov 25, 1929, telling her not to worry, that he would write or call her and that business was bad. His car, a purple Cadillac 4M-46-31, with his rifled wallet was found in a San Diego garage 2 days after his disappearance-placed there by a man who wore a leather vest, khaki trousers and leather puttees, who did not fit his description; also found in the car were cigarettes; a cigar band; strands of reddish hair; a handful of hairpins and other articles which did not belong to the missing man. The only clue to his disappearance was that his car had traces of red clay similar to that found in Borego Valley
California Digitial Newspaper Archive. Crime boss Tony Buccola (who also vanished in May 1930) is alleged to have remarked that he knew what happened to Baumgarteker. There is a question if Baumgarteker's "disappearance" was caused by crime boss Joseph Ardizzonce or by disgruntled employees. Reportedly in 1941 a search was made for a hidden grave of Baumgarteker which was alleged to have been seen years before; however the site was that of a Native American. In the late 1960s a former employee of Baumgartker claimed to police to have known of the location of Baumgarteker's remains
