Human remains found in missing gay man's home

According to the Chronicle, a headless corpse was found in a fish tank at the home on Clara Street near 5th in the SOMA neighborhood.

Now investigators are trying to determine if the remains belong to Brian Egg.

The 65-year-old was reported missing by a neighbor earlier this month. That neighbor says he grew suspicious when two strangers started answering Egg's door, saying the homeowner was on vacation.

David Stevenson, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department, told the Chronicle officers are awaiting an autopsy report on the remains and that “an open and active investigation continues regarding the missing person.”

Lance Silva, 39, was reportedly arrested in connection with the missing person case.

Whoa!
RIP, Brian (seems very likely it's his body).
I admit to being curious about several aspects of this story.
It must have been a big fish tank!
Seems odd that someone removed the head and hands, presumably to prevent an easy ID, but then left the body in the house.
Were there fish in the tank? Did they think the fish would consume the non-skeletal remains?
This makes me think that there was an argument over the fish tank at some point.
I approve of the suspicious neighbor. He seemed to keep a watchful, but not overly nosy, eye on the house. The first article linked above indicated that he rented a room at some point from Brian. I wonder if he was a 'drifter' at some point who settled down and put down roots.
The article describes Brian as 'fringey' and notes that he was often seen waiting in line for a free meal. It seems unlikely that he was paying the people who stayed with him for the odd jobs they were doing. Did he provide a room in exchange? Was companionship supposed to be part of the deal?

Law enforcement sources previously said that a headless and hands-less corpse was found, but officials did not go into details Tuesday.

The search of the home took four days in total, officials said. Inside, police discovered cleaning products and a suspicious odor.

The medical examiner's office is working to identify the body, officials said. The investigation is still ongoing.

The body’s head and hands had been removed and cleaning products had been dumped into the tank with the torso, according to the Chronicle. The medical examiner is using DNA from Egg’s family to determine whether the body found in his home is his, the newspaper reported.
Free called the situation “horrifying” when he spoke to the Chronicle Monday outside Egg’s home.

“The police department could have done a lot more in the early stages,” Free said. “It seemed like they weren’t taking it very seriously. There was a dead body in there all along and they were standing right next to it. What if we hadn’t said anything?”

Police officials at one point called Egg’s home and heard an answering machine message saying he was out of town, McEachern said Tuesday. Free and Egg’s brother, Devon Egg, who lives in Florida, both said that he did not have an answering machine.

Missing SF Man's Credit Card Used To Buy BMW
The case of a missing San Francisco man and a headless torso found inside a fish tank in his home took another turn Wednesday as court documents revealed his stolen credit card was used to buy a BMW in the East Bay.
During a press conference Tuesday, police said two suspects had been identified in connection with the case; 39-year-old Lance Silva and 52-year-old Robert McCaffrey, both of San Francisco. But prosecutors ordered them released until more is known about Egg and his whereabouts.

The person bought the BMW for $5,500. Police showed the car dealer pictures of Egg and Silva, and he said Silva resembled the man who purchased the BMW, police said.

The dealership owner said the man gave him his cell phone number, which matched Silva’s number, Carlson wrote.

After his arrest, Silva told investigators he drove the BMW and parked it at the Pittsburgh/Bay Point BART station, officials said. But, they added, Silva said he found the car parked at Egg’s home and denied the fraud.

This is GENIUS! I wonder why more murderers don't think of it?! o_O
