A Riverside County college student was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison Friday for killing his mentally ill mother, cutting off her head and hands, and dumping her torso in a manner borrowed from an episode of "The Sopranos."
Jason Bautista, 22, who testified that he beat and strangled his mother in self- defense, sat impassively in the ninth-floor Central Justice Center courtroom.
"I am very sorry for all my actions," he told Superior Court Judge Frank F. Fasel in a calm voice. "But this was not a first-degree murder, in my opinion."
Fasel disagreed.
"The jury got it right," the judge said while imposing the maximum sentence.
