Says he wanted to feel what it was like before the end of the world. He sounds psychotic.

In measured tones, Shultz smiled as he described his family's increasing concern over his odd behavior and mental health in the past month, culminating with a brief hospitalization at the county hospital Saturday, before he said a doctor discharged him and sent him in a cab to his mother's Discovery Bay home. An argument with his mother led him to the Almgren residence, where he spent Saturday night before stabbing Jordon Almgren early Sunday morning, the teen said. Jordon's older brother had been his best friend since sixth grade, he said.

DISCOVERY BAY, Calif. (KTVU and Wires) - The suspect in the Sunday morning stabbing death of 9-year old Jordon Almgren made his first court appearance Wednesday.

Eighteen-year-old William Shultz is charged with murder with special circumstances of "lying in wait."

He faces life in prison if convicted. The District Attorney filed an intent not to seek the death penalty because of Shultz's age and lack of prior criminal record. He is due back in court May 22nd.

"There is absolutely no doubt that mental illness is what caused this event," Contra Costa County Public Defender, Robin Lipetzky, said. "Somewhere along the line, you have to wonder if there was a failure in the system."

Lipetzky said the Shultz family tried "for weeks and months" to get help for their son.

On Saturday morning, one day before the stabbing, Shultz's family called the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Department, concerned about his mental state. more at link: http://www.ktvu.com/story/28936072/...s-played-role-in-stabbing-death-of-9-year-old

DISCOVERY BAY -- An attorney for the family of 9-year-old stabbing victim Jordon Almgren spoke for the first time Wednesday night, stressing that the family knew nothing of any mental issues involving suspected killer William Shultz when they invited the longtime family friend to spend the night.
Shultz, 18, was best friends with Jordon's older brother, but attorney Michael Verna said the family was blindsided by the mental health problems he was facing.
"The family knew nothing about his history, and they knew nothing about him seeing a psychiatrist that same day (he slept over at their house), Verna said. "They had absolutely no idea he was having any medical difficulties."

What I'm gathering: his family knew he had problems and tried to get him help as recently as that day, but police didn't think he was bad enough to 5150 him (take him to a psych hospital), so he goes to the Almgren house and tells them he had a fight with his family. The Almgren family was suckered in because they didn't know anything of his history. If only the Schultz family had warned the Almgren family...

A mentally ill man convicted of murdering a sleeping 9-year-old boy was sentenced by a Contra Costa judge to spend possibly the rest of his life in prison.

William Shultz, 20, was sentenced to 30 years to life for murdering Jordy Almgren — the 9-year-old brother of Shultz’s former best friend — and burglarizing the Almgrens’ home. Shultz was a guest at the Almgren household in April 2015, when he stabbed Jordy repeatedly in the early morning hours, later saying he wanted to see what it was like to take a life.
