Missing Person Case

Marvin Blake Shahan Missing Veteran

He was missing in 1969 but not legally marked as deceased until 2010. I’m assuming this timing had to do with the widow’s SS retirement benefits. They were only married a year or so prior to his disappearance? Odd that she wouldn’t have remarried since she was so young.

This entire situation is strange.
He was in El Cajon, CA at his sister’s place. Was the wife there too?
He had recently finished basic training in TX.
He was to be transferred to WA.
He was declared deceased in OH (where his parents were).

My guess is that Ohio was still his residence at the time - the military bases only being temporary locations.

The first article is from 1962, the marriage was 1968, then the request in 2000 for presumed death. There is a post on Ancestry from a relative that states he was meeting with some men to organise a trip when he disappeared. Did you find any information on his widow?

This is also strange, marriage in Virginia, spouse is 18yo. An original certificate is attached and it claims first marriage for her.

Details of Disappearance
Shahan's sister last spoke to him sometime in December 1969 or January 1970, when they both lived in El Cajon, California. He told her he was trying to get a job on the crew of a boat in Ventura or in the Santa Barbara Harbor. He never contacted any of his family after that and has never been heard from again.

A member of the family contacted the local police, but it's unclear whether a missing persons report was filed at the time. Shahan was declared legally dead in 2000, and his sister reported him missing on March 10, 2003. Little information is available as to his fate.
