Polish Tourist, On Vacation in San Diego, Reported Missing

San Diego Police are searching for a Polish tourist last seen in La Jolla before disappearing this month.

Police said Michal Marcin Krowczynski, 30, was on vacation in the U.S. before he was reported missing on Jan. 18, after he failed to make his scheduled flight back to Phoenix the day before and eventually back to Poland.

Sebastian Rudewicz, a friend of Krowczynski, said he had hosted Krowczynski in Phoenix from Jan. 11 to Jan. 16, when he came to visit San Diego. That night, Rudewicz said his friend had dinner with two former colleagues.

The next day, Krowczynski checked out of the La Jolla Biltmore Motel at about 12 p.m. and asked the motel to hold on to his bags for two hours, according to Rudewicz. He never returned for his bags and he hasn't been seen or heard from family and friends since.

Krowczynski's Instagram profile shows photos posted from La Jolla, Pacific Beach, and Tijuana on Jan. 17, though it's unclear when the photos themselves were taken.

Polish tourist disappears during trip to San Diego

Michal Krowczynki Vacationing in San Diego from Poland Missing

This is concerning. Where could Michal possibly be? Did he know anyone in San Diego? He asked the hotel to hold his bags for two hours. Where was he planning on going? I assume that he didn't have a rental car, did he?
It’s strange he checked out on 16th and posted stuff on Instagram the next day.

"The last contact he had with family or friends was one week ago, on Jan. 17.

According to police, Krowczynski’s social media accounts showed several posts made throughout San Diego County before he vanished. He was last seen in the La Jolla area.
Investigators said Krowczynski has never before been reported missing and, as the bulletin stated, “the circumstances surrounding his disappearance are considered unusual.”

Krowczynski is described as 5-foot-9 and 180 pounds, with short, brown hair and green eyes. In two photos released by police Thursday, Krowczynski is wearing braces."

My understanding from the news is that he checked out on the 17th but I could’ve misunderstood.

Just getting in on this case so haven’t done much research yet. I live in the city of San Diego. We had a “storm” on Jan 17 (storm for us locals ;-) which included a high surf advisory (SeaWorld closed that day due to the weather.)

I wish they’d give more details on where his phone last pinged, etc...

Sounds like he knew at least the 2 previous co-workers who he had dinner with the night before.

His hotel was close enough to the ocean that he could’ve walked there if he wanted to take photos. It’s not unusual for people to get swept away by high surf while taking photos etc. It seems like LE knows more than they’re saying because they’re considering the circumstances unusual.

MOO

Looks like he was in TJ. Maybe he went back across the border and can’t get back?

My husband is retired from CBP in the San Diego sector. He said CPB would have a record of him coming back into the US, especially since he was not a US citizen. I would hope San Diego PD would have checked this before they opened a missing person case and said his last location was La Jolla.

Would Michal possibly stop in at a school? imo.
"Lucasz said Krowczynski is a high school math teacher in Poland and would never miss school. He's also pursuing a Ph.D. back home.

According to his brother, Krowczynski's vacation plans involved visiting a friend in Phoenix, Arizona, and then traveling to San Diego."

This is very concerning. He checked out and had the hotel hold his bags for (two hours?) He had somewhere he wanted or needed to be. Did someone here mention he takes photos? (well many folks do on vacation) but why wait to the very end after checkout to get pictures? I don't think that's it.

Though there is a Polish Catholic church / cultural center in San Diego, I don't believe San Diego has a large number of Polish immigrants. The missing person also has a good job in Poland and was pursuing a doctorate in mathematics. A doctorate in mathematics would not only lead to an even better job in Poland, but could probably be used to facilitate legal work permits or even legal immigration to the United States if he wanted to.

Poland's economy is very strong, and people with his education could well prefer to stay home. In short, Krowczynski does not appear to be an individual who would over stay his tourist visa and work "under the table". Even if he were, he would need luggage and San Diego, with a small Polish / eastern European population would not be a good starting point.

La Jolla is very low crime, but the Pacific Beach area to the immediate south of La Jolla can have some iffy bars / clubs. Nothing truly dangerous, just certain amount of drunks- some looking for trouble, and a few fist fights.

Many parts of downtown San Diego, however, have fallen on hard times. Perhaps he went to the tourist sites immediately by down town, then wandered into the blighted areas? Even still, the areas are only relatively blighted and not truly dangerous (some iffy bars of the throbbing music, boisterous / drunk patrons serving jello shots type with large numbers of homeless on the streets)

The original report of 2 hours was wrong. The latest report (I linked it in an earlier post) says he checked out at 11am and asked the motel to hold his luggage until 4pm. His (missed) flight back to Phoenix was at 7pm the same evening.
