Bump. I assume he was catching a local bus as he was born in San Francisco and his family were there. There are multiple family trees on Ancestry which include him and a divorce record from 1969. The trees show a wife (presumably the one from the 1969 divorce) and child. At some point he was declared deceased as there is a Social Security Index entry. Possibly this was much later in 1987 as that was when the last amendment occurred.
It would be very useful to know the case in which he was due to testify. The big case at that time involved the top of the Hells Angels hierarchy, including Sonny Barger - the President of the Angels, being charged with the murder of Servio Aguero on May 21, 1972 (as a result of a drug deal going wrong). Whilst this would not fit with an impending trial at 1 June it is possible that confusion has arisen and the trial would be pending if they had been charged but for a future date. If Hawkins was a witness in this case it would be no surprise if the Angels went after him. It is almost impossible to think of a more important case for them and multiple others on the fringe of this case were killed in the following months. Of course, the case may have been something else.
